Suggestions for 455 Varmit scope?
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:31:06 PM »
Hi all,
I just picked up my 455 Varmit (22LR) and now have the task/joy of picking a scope and rings. I will be using this mainly for target at 50, but occasionally for dispatching it's namesakes at similar or less distance when they become a nuisance or, as is usually the case here any more, they are sick. I cant afford a Leupold and am looking at the Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40,Target EFR, Precision Reticle. Good scope for my purposes or no? What do you think of the BDC reticles? I know many of you guys and gals have had a lot experience with this rifle, so I am more than willing to take advice from those in the know. Are the medium height rings OK for this rifle with a heavy barrel? Anything I buy I have to order because we have no well stocked gun shops here and I would like to have some confidence in what I am ordering before I hit the checkout button!
Thanks for your help,
Carole

I would think medium rings would be OK there. I was almost able to get a Weaver V16 mounted with medium Warne rings, but it just barely didn't fit with the heavy barrel, and I mean just B A R E L Y. Thats a 42mm with AO, so it's pretty hefty out front.

There's a lot of those ProStaff scopes out there, so there must something to them for that many folks to be buying them.

I'm personally not a big fan of the BDCs, especially if it's mainly going to be for target use. A lot of folks like them though, so it all boils down to personal preference. For paper and small critters, I like a fine crosshair. A lot of folks like a dot. Just go with what suits your eye best.

Congratulations on your new rifle, they're shooters. I own a 453 American, and it would be the last of my rifles that I would consider parting with. I used Talley rings to mount a 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest, but I would choose whatever scope you want first and then shop for the rings. The CZ rimfire bolt lift is known for complicating the process a bit, but if there's a will, there's a way.

I mainly write with regards to the Nikon 3-9x40 EFR. I have one mounted on a Savage Mark II, and I am very satisfied with it. I reviewed the scope and rifle (http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=47214.msg277119#msg277119), of which, here is the excerpt concerning the scope:

"The Nikon EFR is a newer scope. I instantly noticed how much brighter this scope is from the Prostaffs I have owned in the past. It has 1/4 minute adjustments at 50 yards, and features a fine crosshair with a target dot. I was hesitant about the dot, but it grew on me after I started shooting with it. I knew the dot would help when hunting, but I was concerned about its use when target shooting. However, when I put that dot on the 1" bull, it basically auto-centered and allowed quick and accurate fire. The EFR's main feature is the parallax adjustment on the objective lens. It allows adjustment from infinity all the way down to 10 yards; a nice feature for a rimfire rifle. Overall I was very impressed with the Nikon EFR's performance, as it is bright and it tracks well."

I don't think you can go wrong with the Nikon EFR, and your approach in considering what has worked for others, is wise. Concerning the BDC reticle, I am not a fan. I subscribe to the ?Aim small, miss small? principle, and the BDC is in direct contradiction to it. The best of fortune to you, on your search for a scope.

Thanks  folks,
I ended up ordering a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x 40mm. I ordered the CZ rings which were a bit pricey, but they are steel, not aluminum like most of the ones I have seen. It all comes in Wednesday, then I will have the fun of attempting my first scope mount. I hope with all the videos and articles on doing so, I will be able to manage it. I am a little concerned that because I have a small face, I may have to figure out a way to build up the stock a bit, but I will cross that bridge if and when I come to it.... ;)

New member, second cz 455 Varmit Thumbhole in .22lr (for now). Installed a Leupold VX-2 2-7x33 with Warne 7.3/.22 mounts (High)(approx. $27.00) flipped for 11 mm position. Fit a treat!
