I know that you've already purchased the pistol -- which I think is a very good thing -- but you might want to see if you can track down the specific statute relevant to restrictions on long guns and magazines/ammo in the car. When I was researching my state, I found a ton of misinformation stating that the ammo had to be separate, locked up separately, one item in the cab and in the trunk, etc, and when I looked at the state statutes, there were zero restrictions. The state ten miles adjacent is more restricted, but allows a loaded mag to be in vicinity of the rifle as long as it's not locked into the mag well. There was a ton of misinformation there as well.
It may be a long shot, but your state may be more permissive than you believe and the only way to find out is to track down the exact laws. You may find that you can comfortably put your VZ or any other rifle back there only a couple of clicks away from use. It might become useful in the future.
The terrible thing is that you now got me thinking. If things denigrate, a loaded and legal 7.62x39 firearm under the coat on the passenger seat is a comforting idea.
Enjoy the pistol.
