50 yard load development 9mm
« on: June 19, 2016, 09:04:48 AM »
I have a cz 75-sp01 and looking to develop a long range load 50 yds. This is solely out of curiosity. I have been reloading for 8 months 9mm & 5.56. I have a chrono too. What type of bullet and weight should I start with? From what I gather a lighter weight bullet at a higher velocity would probably be a good start (flatter trajectory). Any suggestions on bullet types, powders, and velocities? I know I can not achieve 2" groups but I do want to know what can be accomplished at this range with this gun.

I'm going to use Hornady 115gr HAP for a similar project with Vectan BA-9 at 1100+ fps.

I'll also load some up with some N320 just to see. The velocity will be somewhat lower with the VV.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

I've read where CZ winners at the NRA Nationals use the 115 HAP bullet,  but I don't recall the powder used or if it was mentioned.  You might find that Googling the match.

I think the 9mm bullseye go-to bullet is, as 1SOW said, 115gr Hornady HAP (or other premium match-grade JHP), and the go-to powder is Power Pistol.

If I had to guess, and it would be pure guess work, I'd also be saying Power Pistol.

Why not?
The 10X bushing by GCW is a must for good 50 yard groups. Up to 3" differences here between the 10X and the OEM bushing.
It really depends on how good/bad the original bushing and fit is. For example my SP-01 was good from the factory and best groups were tested before 10X bushing installed. 10X bushings didn't add much to the accuracy for this gun.

My best results came from Hornady 125gr HAP (JHP) bullets for 50m. Hornady 124gr FMJRN were almost as good.
After testing a few powders, I am back to use Titegroup for match load in 9mm. Sorted brass and consistency of the reload process may contribute more to the shooting accuracy.

How much testing did you do at 50 yards? I found the same with a few guns at 25, at 50 there was a big difference in all of them, some as much as 3" in difference.
I have tested all loads at 50' first for function and select ones that have potential for accuracy. Next test and chrono at 50m. Last step is - the ones that showed good groups at 50m, I load and test few more times to confirm that good groups are repeatable. Because of our range/berms configuration, i have to skip 25yard testing now, but before, loads than didn't make 1-1.25" groups at 25 yards, didn't get tested on 50m. All those loads showed few single hole groups 0.75" or less at 50' first.
Also still loading cheaper PD 124gr FMJ bullets for indoor 50' practice understanding that 50m results will not be as good as with more expensive Hornady HAP. At my indoor range they prefer to see FMJ bullets, although they make an exception for me and allow me to test JHP, knowing that i don't hit their target hangers and cause ricochets.
I shot my best loads in local club BE matches. On yesterday match my best was 93/6X on slow fire 50m and a couple of 98/2X-3X at rapid fire 25m. Using Hornady 125gr HAP for the long line and PD 124 JHP with the same load at short 25yard, gave me results in the mid-800s out of 900 points for the last few matches. No clean targets yesterday, but i have done it before. This is my first year of BE shooting and reloading and I am still learning.

I'll feel great just to hit an 8"plate consistently at 25, let alone 50.  Lol
