Well, okay. 5 punches, and a scratch. I finally removed it. It isn't a roll pin. I took a brass 1/4" punch and sent it back into the frame, used the starter from CGW, then a pin punch...whew. It's a good thing I'm refinishing this pistol, i have the opportunity to buff out the scratch.
No it is not a roll pin. The factory pin when new is straight and solid with an indent on either end which is flared over after installation hence the need for a starter punch. They can be no fun but this experience will certainly help you next time you do one of these.
Without make too much out of this... you are saying this is a more or less solid pin w/ a hollow at each end to allow the pin to be staked w/ a punch after assembly ? That explains a lot to me about why this pin is such a pain if that's the case. Sounds like the forward sling loop screw on a Garand. Once it's peened over it's almost impossible to remove.
Yes that's it exactly. You use a starter punch that is smaller in diameter to get the pin moving and once you have overcome the mushroomed end the pin usually comes out pretty easily or at least that has been my experience.
