Carry Ammo for PCR?
« on: December 01, 2018, 08:48:22 AM »
I?ve been using Speer Lawman 124gr for my range ammo and Speer 124gr HP Gold Dots for my self defense ammo in my SP-01. I?ve just purchased a PCR (love it!) and was just going to keep using the Speer loads for carry too.  What do you guys use?

My thinking is.... rounds with rounded (rather than conical) ogives are always going to feed better and require less "testing". Therefore, I stick with Speer Gold Dots and Federal Hydra-Shoks.

Not saying anything against Horandy's lineup as far as feeding or effectiveness. Just saying you might want to do more testing with that shape bullet. Definitely take your barrel with you to the store, since ammo can't be returned.

I do not carry (location) but for HD i settled on the 124g Federal HST. I reload 124g FMJ for practice so i decided to stick with the same bullet weight. I prefer the recoil impulse of the 124g over the other bullet weights that i have experimented with.

Speer gold dots have run without issue in a number if my CZs as well.

Wobbly makes a good point though. To add to that if you have the motivation polishing the feed ramp of a CZ pistol is not a bad idea. The feed ramps can vary from pistol to pistol in smoothness like many parts of a CZ.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

I reload 124gr Gold Dots for my PCR and they run well through it. Actually I have run 124gr SWC's, 124 gr Gold Dots, 147gr Round Nosed Flat Point, and 124gr FMJ through my PCR's without any problems.

I did have a little trouble with the 124 SWC's getting the COAL correct at first but have shot many hundreds since with no problems.

HST in 124gr or 147gr, depending on the length of the barrel (PCR vs 75B).

I?m sure others perform well but I?ve just decided to stick with one brand for SD.

I'm still a 147gr std pressure Federal HST guy for momentum.  Passes the battery of FBI tests, but I do believe several 124gr std pressure and some 115gr+P do as well.

Speer 124 gr +P Gold Dot factory ammunition is my go-to with all 9mm CZs.  When I handload, I use the 124 gr Gold Dots in Speer cases/CCI primers with IMR SR 4756 (@ 5.8-6.0 gr.).  This will yield a slightly compressed load with normal OALs, but it is very safe and virtually identical in velocity, muzzle flash, etc.

Barnes TAC-XPD 115gr +P is the way to go.  Penetration is important, consistent expansion is important, and this solid copper bullet does both.  It is the only 115gr bullet to pass the FBI tests.

This is ALSO only an 1100 feet/sec load.  For those of you that know action pistol shooting, that's a PF of 126.5.  This high-performing defense load is also comparable in recoil to a gamer baby fart load.

I keep Barnes at this time for SD, but I also very much like Speer Gold Dot and Winchester PDX Defender 147.

But in a compact or subcompact, I would take the baby-soft Barnes TAC-XPD every time, all day, every day.

Food for thought.  ;)

Currently all my 9's that are in my defensive line up including my PCR are loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. All were well tested with it and function flawlessly.
Every one has their "pet" favorite defensive round to be sure but function in the weapon is the first most important test after that shot placement is the next most important test.

This is the old taboo where your defensive ammo could be used against you in court so they think if they shoot what the police use they are protected against that. Obviously the reality is the ammo matters none but what is paramount is whether you had the legal right to use deadly force to begin with. If you are in court then that is the question at hand. This has always been a nonsense argument as no one can ever come up with a case where it's actually happened.
I think Massad Ayoob started the rumor years ago but even he doesn't actually cite a real case that I've ever heard.
