I had a vortex 2-7x33 on mine and it fit perfect, but I like smaller profile scopes on rifles. Since then I have mounted a Leupold freedom 1.5-4x20 scope and like it even better. Mine is a CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39. I believe the 4-12x40 would fit but the bolt handle would be very close with stock CZ rings. Vortex makes very good and clear scopes, I like them very much and I don't think you are making a bad decision buying one. It all depends on the type of shooting you are doing and the distance. I only shoot out to 150 yards so lower magnification and smaller profile works better for me.

You might find that the high magnification won't be very useful as the cartridge kinda runs outa gas past 300 yards. I had a 4-12 on mine once, and it just took up a lot of room. 2-7 would be perfect, someday. :) However, all that being said, if you like it and want to use it, go for it, good stuff, have a great time and post pics. :)
