New holster, Uncle Mike's IWB Tuckable, Size 15
« on: March 06, 2019, 09:59:51 AM »
Saw these somewhere (another forum I think) the other day and ordered one to try out.  $20 off Amazon.  The size 15 is what I ordered (4 sizes available).  The P07 and P09 with the RMRs on them will work in this holster.  They lack about 1/4" of the trigger guard going all the way to the bottom due to the RMR but the trigger is still covered.  The P09 without the RMR goes right in.  The P01 is a little sloppy (in this size 15).  The XD 5" Tactical .45 works in this holster, too.

Nylon shell/wings, kydex (some sort of polymer) lining that keeps it popped open for reholstering, plastic clips, adjustable with three holes in the wings and five holes in the clips and the thumb break straps are also adjustable.  It comes with a plastic "ruler" to allow you to break the hook/loop fastening of the straps loose from the inside of the enclosures those are adjusted up/down in.

After some adjustment trying to get it to fit/work like I wanted it to.  Never quite made it, not done yet, but had to go out with the dogs.  Wore it with the P09 .40 S&W and was reminded of why I open carry in the winter.  Tough to get that winter coat out of the way to draw from inside the waist band.

Tried it as was and had two issues.  The pistol was just too far down inside the waist band and the bottom of the holster cocks way out to the right under the belt.  Looks like you've got a walkie/talkie jammed in your pocket.  Sort of defeats the concealed carry idea.

The bottom of the holster sticking way out was not as much of an issue once the pistol was raised up higher but was still there to an degree.  Looking at the clips it's most likely the spacers between the clips and the holster.  Squeeze the belt tight and pushes the pistol but into your side which cocks the bottom of the holster outwards.  I'll need to order some short screws to try removing the spacers and that should help (who knows if it will cause other issues.)

Notice the design of the clips.  I suppose the idea is for the clip to be inside the belt on the waistband of the pants.  The outwards hook fits against the bottom of the belt and keeps the holster from coming out with the pistol during the draw.  My problem was the waist band of the pants sagged way down below the belt making the bottom of the holster cocking outwards even worse.  Putting the clips over the belt helped, but then they're not as well disguised.  To be fair, my pants are too big for me.  I've lost 50 lbs. in the last year and while I've put new holes in my belts to take up the slack there's not much I can do for the pants (and they're pretty new - for me, only a couple years old and I hate to buy new pants till these wear out - cuts into my primers/powder/bullets budget).  If there wasn't so much slack in the pants waistband I don't think the holster/pistol would pull them down below the belt.

Initially, the only other thing I noticed was "change" is not good sometimes.  None of my other IWB holsters (these days) are thumb break.  When I got in the house after the dog walk I pulled my coat off, grabbed the pistol butt and pulled the pistol and holster completely out of my pants/waist line.  Not good if I really needed a functioning pistol in my hands in a hurry.  Just not in the habit of popping a thumb break to get the pistol out.  I might be able to use it with no thumb break.  Another test for another day.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Removing the spacers and using short screws didn't make it "better."

It eliminated the bottom of the holster poking outwards but then my belt wouldn't go into the grooves on the bottom of the clips due to the kydex liner creating a hump that resulted in the clips being so close to the holster that a tight belt "lifted" off the holster material too far to engage the clip/hooks.

I can slide the clips down over the belt, instead of behind it, but that doesn't use the clips as designed.  I think the holster needs to be even higher than it is and I don't think the design will allow it.  Higher, for me, to get the thing up high enough to make the thumb break usable, more usable.  Right now, with a very tight belt, it's smashed up tight against my side and I have to push outwards on the grip to make room to push the thumb break tab inwards to pop the snap.

Will have to experiment some more another day.
