Firing Pin Block chewed up on Scorpion
« on: March 22, 2019, 08:28:38 AM »
Just wondering what the hell I did and if anyone else has seen this? I have about 1500 suppressed rounds through the scorpion, mostly with the cz custom trigger. Went to install the Franklin Binary Trigger and noticed it didn?t cycle smoothly during function check when in binary. Then I saw that the firing pin block on my bolt looked chewed up, as well as a couple other areas on my bolt.

I?ve talked to CZ Warranty and it seemed like they were going to help me out once I send them these pictures, but they were surprised to here about bolt wear.

Good question. Hammer looks like it made contact and left a mark, but it isn?t chewed up

I wonder if that CZ trigger pack is slightly outta tolerance?  Have you manually just took the trigger pack and the bolt (one in each hand) and laid them on top of one another to see if that hammer makes contact with the firing pin block?  That hammer looks (hard to tell though) that it may be made from harder steel than the OEM one that comes with the CZ?!  Wonder if the design allows it to make contact inadvertently?

My guess was that a blown primer flew into the receiver and chewed something up one time, and that if the firing pin block was clean and straight, it would no longer be making contact with the hammer.

Tolerance could be a thing too. I don?t want to send the whole thing back to CZ, but I?m guessing that?s the next step.

Looking at it a little further, something has caused the hammer to make some indents on the bolt... it appears that exactly where the indents are on the bolt is exactly where it's beginning to eat into the firing pin block.  Obviously you need a new bolt and firing pin block, but the real question is - what made the hammer (I'm thinking that's all that could have done that) make an indent into the bolt like that?!

EDIT:  I just saw your last response... we kinda said the same thing.  I hadn't thought of the primer though.

I don't see any of the typical evo  hammer face deformation that we normally see on these hammers. since your hammer doesn't appear to be deforming,  I'd say your hammer is much harder than your bolt and fpb and its pinging the snot out of it.

CZ did not appreciate my honesty and said that since I was running the CZ Custom trigger, they will not warranty. I ordered a new FPB and spring, it was about $28 (plus shipping and tax). I might call CZ Custom and see if they have any input, but what?s done is done. I am sure I can repair it and can?t wait to try out the new binary trigger.

I just recently purchased a new CZ Scorpion Micro and only have about 300 rounds through it and I've noticed similar marks on my bolt, though not nearly as bad as yours. Mine is 100% original and with fewer rounds through it, but it has that exact indent on the bolt and minor scrape marks on the surface of the bolt in a line near the striker block. Mine has only slightly scraped the finish and hasn't gouged the striker block, but then it only has 300 rounds through it. I didn't see any suspicious marks on the hammer.

Before I even fired my gun, I disassembled it and cleaned it. I don't think I've ever purchased a new gun that had so much dirt and guck in it before. It was then that I noticed the indent on the bolt and another mark about 2" forward of the striker block that slightly rounded off a corner.  I went ahead and lubed the bolt and receiver and reassembled everything. After shooting it a few days later I examined the marks and they didn't appear to have gotten any worse. The marks on my bolt, other than the indent on the edge, are merely wear marks in the bolt finish and I'm guessing that CZ would say that is normal.

But after seeing the condition of your bolt, I'm getting a little concerned. I will probably go ahead and contact CZ to see what they have to say about it. Please keep us informed as to what CZ says about your bolt and what they are suggesting that you do about it. For only 1500 rounds, your bolt really looks bad.

Well, until I get the new firing pin block I wanted to see how she ran. I hand filed any sharp areas that seemed out of place and headed to the range for a quick 11 minute session before sunset. All I can say is it still runs. Binary trigger rules. I have a lot of back pressure from the suppressor, so that definitely add to wear marks. I took the bolt out and it doesn?t look any worse. I?m still leaning towards the idea that primers flew out and got chewed up in the action/trigger assembly.
