Inexpensive 6 handgun carrying case.
« on: March 28, 2019, 10:28:08 PM »
I just thought I should share this. Last year or so, Walmart had a great sale on a Plano 4 handgun case for under $10, so I picked up a few of them for a rainy day. This same case is still reasonably priced at ~$20 at Walmart and Amazon. Anyway, they have three layers of open cell foam, and one of the thick layers is that pluck and pull foam, so you can easily configure different shapes.

I wanted to pick up a 6 handgun case for secure/safe transporting and was shocked at the prices for that type of gun case. Most prices were well over $100. A pair of scissors and 15 minutes later fulfilled my wish. For under $10, I now have a secure/bump proof case that can handle 6 full size handguns. I added three large desiccant bags that are under the lid foam layer to help keep any moisture at bay.

That's two Shadow 2's, two CZ75's, a Shadow Orange with an extended barrel, and a Grand Power X-Calibur. The lid closes nice and snug on the weapons.

Necessity is the mother of innovation...
Nicely played and it looks like that's how it was made.

I've got the same case and this is a fantastic idea.
What are the dimensions of your cutouts?
Should I use shorter cutouts for compacts vs full sized?

How deep is the lid?  It looks like the rear of the slides stick up awfully high for it to shut.

Not bad. I looked at those but they didn't seem all that sturdy.

I spent a few extra bucks and got a Apache 4800 series case from HF. With the 20% off coupon, it was $57 shipped.

Very well made. It's essentially a Pelican but a 1/3 of the price.

I picked one of those up several years ago because they were on sale for 5$ and I thought it might come in handy. They're nowhere as sturdy as something like that Apache but so far mine has held up well to occasional use.

Yes, they were $5 each.  It seems like it's only been a year, but that probably means it was three years ago...lol.

How deep is the lid?  It looks like the rear of the slides stick up awfully high for it to shut.

The lid depth is about 1.75" plus you have an inch gap above the middle layer and another 1.75" bottom layer. The lid closes with minimal effort, just a good snug fit without crushing anything.

I just measured the rear slide height that's sticking up out of the non-compressed foam. it's 3", so that leaves about 1.5" of compressed foam for top/bottom.

Each gun cutout is 2 squares of foam with a 3 square gap between each handgun.  You could cut the length shorter for compacts, but I don't think that's necessary unless you want that look.

That's a nice case.  I've been using one of these Plano cases for the range for several years now, and I carry 300-400 rounds of ammo, headsets, tools and mags in it. So far, it has been holding up well. That's why I bought several more when I saw them on sale at $5.

Hiya and thanks for the thread. Relieved that your thread calls it a carrying case and not a storage case.
Its an inexpensive and attractive looking setup. If anyone has a mate or heard of a gun getting rust,or foam goo on the finish, then hope operators consider,at least purchasing replacement pelican foam and not a knock off. Its a more inert foam, most costly,  better resists, oils, solvents, and moisture. I replaced the factory foam in my tactical sports case and its perfect for carrying two guns and mags. Since I carry that in my range bag I don't need a waterproof/crushproof case like the Pelican. If I did, would not hesitate to pay the extra bucks on a superior product, after having invested thousands in the guns already. Be well.

Thanks for the reply.  I agree closed cell foam is best for storage since it won't absorb moisture like open cell foam can.  However, for many many years, I've had good success storing several firearms in open cell foam cases.  My storage area is pretty much airtight, and I have several large desiccant bags in the space to capture any moisture.

Just an update.  Today, I replaced the open cell foam dividers with closed cell foam.  The open cell foam was starting to fall apart from usage, so I picked up 2pcs of 1"x 12"x 16" polyethylene closed cell foam.  This new foam should hold up much better. The total cost for this case was about $25, and I have an extra piece of closed cell foam if I want to convert another case.

Here's the current Plano case at Amazon, but my cost was $5 when they were on clearance at Walmart. Anyway, the Plano case has been holding up very well, and that's why I updated the foam divider.
