CZ 97B Make-Over
« on: May 10, 2019, 12:34:08 AM »
Picked up a 97B on a consignment recently.  The previously owner Crayon?ed the roll-mark, even the magazine couldn't escape the treatment.

I am the complete opposite.  I prefer having nothing noticeable at all, so here comes the rubbing alcohol and a toothpick.  It cleaned up nicely, but there is still some waxy residual on the polycoat which I will work on later.

The slide is missing the LCI, and the grub screw is loose.  Used a 1/16? hex wrench to back out the screw, cleaned and degreased the loaded chamber indicator plate female threads and the screw.  Installed the new LCI and applied blue Loctite to ensure that the screw does not walk up and out.

One thing I noticed while disassembling the pistol was that the left side of the trigger bar was not riding on the trigger bar spring.  It was actually wedged against the frame.  Proper spring tension (3-4mm above the trigger bar) and position will improve the trigger pull.  Earlier I did a trigger bar tuning on a P-01 and noticed the difference immediately.

Improper trigger bar spring seating may explain why the trigger bar is only worn on one side

The barrel is pretty beefy at .591? OD

The trigger is pretty meaty too

Screw-on barrel bushing and the recoil spring plug

Guide rod.  OEM is the plastic one on top.  The stainless steel rod is a door hinge pin from Home Depot.  I think I can trim it to make it work, though I need to check the tolerance.

Here are the rest of the tuning suspects

The sear cage is pretty cruddy (JoeL approves :D)

The disconnector "wings" appear to be worn only on one side

The DA pads on the disconnector

The area between the hammer stop and the hook is very rough

Familiar rubbing surfaces

Skid marks on hammer strut corners

Hammer is rubbing the frame on both sides

Time to get some elbow grease and go to work.

Got some light springs and a set of rubber grips for round 1.

"Let's get ready to rumble!"

Great looking pistol: looks like it will clean up nicely.  Are you planning on changing the sights, or keeping it stock?

I'll probably install the Dawson FO front sight, as it is a lot easier for my eyes to pick up.

Quick update on the guide rod:

Shortened the door hinge pin from 4" to 3", same length as the OEM rod.  Trimmed the head of the pin to match the OEM at .395".  This will make sure that the pin sits flushed with the cutout underneath the barrel and right above the trigger spring.  Finally, rounded off the end of the pin.  The pin diameter is .233", slightly bigger than the OEM.  The OEM guide rod weights in at .11oz.  The new rod weights in at .63oz, should help with the recoil.

I picked up a used 97 a few years ago. I loved the blued finish and wood grips. I considered modifying it but then I found a brand new one for sale so now I have one of each. The only thing I may do is add the CGW rail and have it as my HD pistol to rotate with my colt m45a1.

The sear, lifter arm and the FPB need some smoothing without removing any materials.

Completed round 1 and reassembled the Big Bore back together.  Installed a 15# mainspring, reduced power trigger return spring, FPB spring and firing pin spring.  The new pull weight:  DA 5.6#/SA 2.4#.  Old pull was DA 8.5#/SA 3.5#.  Still has the take-up, but I will leave it for now.

I will take the 97 and my Colt M1911 to the range for a comparison next week :D

Thanks!  I enjoy working on them as much as taking them to the range, hahaha...
