Glock 17 MOS with Venom RD
« on: May 30, 2019, 12:43:17 AM »
Put a venom vortex on a G 17 mos . Sighted it in with a bore sight not at a great distance . Went to the range seemed to be dialed in pretty well at 5 -7 yards  . The red dot seem pretty well removed from the iron sights so not sure how iron sights would help you be more accurate . To me would seem like more of a distraction . Was fun to shoot all together different from irons . More focus on the target .

I've thought about that myself. It would be an even bigger distraction if they were fiber optic or night sights.

I've found if I can see the iron sights I will try to align them. If I only see the red dot, I treat it the same way I do a red dot rifle sight.

Put a Vortex venom on a Glock 41 mos thinking it would be a great bowling pin pistol. This is a first for me with a red dot on a pistol and I'm just not getting along with it. Sighting in I didn't like how much more I have to break my wrists to get the muzzle down to get the red dot on target. At matches, up comes the pistol to align my sights like muscle memory has done thousands of times before and the dot is nowhere to be seen. Now I'm swinging the muzzle around looking for the dot. Not good.
I have 3 red dots on rifles that aren't a problem. I just can't get along with one on a pistol. Anybody else, or am I just the weird one.

I sighted in my Venom with a bore sight then fine tweaked it . If you bring the muzzle slightly down you can see the red dot . I can see the red dot it what appears to be the middle of the window . I didn't notice having to change my grip drastically just slightly . Personally I would forget the iron sights and work on seeing the dot . My only issue is astigmatism makes the dot slightly distorted but I can live with that so far . I turn the brightness way down .

I love my Venom. I put one on an M&P 2.0 and my times and accuracy are way better. I'll be putting one on a p10f this week.

My P07 has an amber dot DI RMR on it and an amber FO front sight.  I really don't notice the front sight, unless I make myself shoot an iron sight group, then I ignore the RMR dot.

My P09 has a green dot DI RMR on it and amber FO front sight.  Just cut and paste the second sentence above to go here.

My wife has a CZ75 Compact with an amber dot DP Pro on it.  The amber dot FO just confused the heck out of her.  A guy on another forum recommended putting a green FO rod in the front sight and she was tickled with it after that.  Having two colors made it okay/easy for her to figure out which "dot" to use for which way of aiming the pistol.

We're all different.  I used to hate FO front sights.  After getting the Tactical Sport .40 I've found I really like the small diameter green FO front sight.  Works much better for me than the big fat amber FO sight on the XDM 5.25" 9MM.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

If your eyes are good enough to shoot well with irons, you'll probably not have the motivation to change to Red Dot on pistols. There's definitely a learning curve. But, those who have made the commitment are shooting faster and more accurately with Red Dots.

Three years ago, I came to the realization that my aging eyes could no longer pick up both the irons and the target. I fiddled with different glasses, and came to the conclusion that corrective shooting glasses were at best a compromise, and in an emergency I probably wouldn't have the right glasses on anyhow. Fortunately, I'm farsighted needing only corrective 'readers' to see the irons.
So, after experimenting with some RDS on my 22 pistols, I found I could simply shoot more accurately with the red dot without needing any eye correction lenses, just focusing on the distant target and placing the dot over it. Since then I've gone all-in on Red Dots for most of my pistols and after a lot of dry-fire practice at home, I've developed the muscle-memory necessary to shoot faster and more accurately than I could ever do with irons. Nearly 70 now, it's kept me in the game. But, YMMV  -Vinny
