Another 1911 Followed Me Home!
« on: July 22, 2019, 03:57:32 AM »
Seems like I can't walk into a gun shop lately without a 1911 following me home.  I like them a lot but every time I think I'm over 1911's and already have as many as I need (4), another one comes along to remind me that I'm not...and I don't.  This time, it's a stainless Springfield TRP.

With custom and 'boutique' guns being priced about the same as they've always been, there are definitely some deep discounts right now on production guns.  One of the nicest I've ever seen is the TRP.

Unless you already have one, i would look for an old war horse.  They have a special charisma/draw you wont find in a new 1911.

also, there no rule you cant have just 1 of ANY toy.

Thanks, all.  I carried a 1950's-vintage Colt 1911A1 for the six years I was on active duty in the US Army.  Talk about your war horse!  That thing was in pretty rough shape when it was issued to me but, my unit was lucky enough to have an armorer who was very good and by the time he had finished fixing it up with new front and rear sights, match grade barrel and trigger job, it was as accurate as anything I've ever owned.  I couldn't pinpoint the exact year of manufacture but I know it was somewhere between 1951-1954.  My only regret was that the Army wouldn't sell it to me when I decided to become a civilian again because it had become a trusted companion.  It wasn't much to look at but it sure had it where it mattered.

I go thru different phases but, two guns I've never gotten tired of adding to my collection are CZ's and 1911's.  Every time I think I'm 'over' them, another one comes along to prove me wrong. ;)

My first impression: I shoulda got one of these a long time ago.  The TRP was always on one of my back burners but, I go thru phases and another full-size 1911 wasn't really high on my list of priorities.

Something I learned during my Internet research and shopping is that there are two different models of TRP's.  The standard TRP (no rail) and the TRP Operator (rail).  The standard TRP has a two-piece guide rod, while the TRP Operator has a one-piece guide rod. Both guns have Tritium night sights. The TRP has fixed Novak combat sights, and the TRP Operator has a fully adjustable rear sight. Both come with two seven-round stainless steel mags with slam pads, both have their frames made out of forged steel, and the same goes for the slides. Both have similar G-10 grips, and both have five-inch match grade stainless steel barrels. The TRP weighs 42 oz., while the TRP Operator weighs 45 oz., due to the Picatinny rail. Actually, there are very few differences at all between the two guns.  The barrel on the TRP Operator is a heavier bull barrel, as opposed to a standard diameter barrel on the TRP.  Most owners report about the same performance in accuracy between the bull and standard barrel, though.  It might be fun to do a side-by-side comparison sometime.

If you like adjustable sights, the TRP Operator is the way to go. If you like fixed sights, the standard TRP is what you want. If you want that Picatinny rail for mounting lights and lasers, then the TRP Operator is your choice. Other than that, the guns are pretty much the same in all the areas that count.

The first 25!  10 yards, Geco 230gr FMJ

Geco ammunition always seems to perform well in my other 1911's and the TRP was no exception.  I always seem to shoot more accurately at 10 yards than 7 (which is weird, I know) but the front sight lines-up better at that distance for me using a standard six-o'clock hold on the target's red dot.  The trigger is really nice on the TRP, too.  It's neither alarmingly-light nor overly-heavy.  I guesstimate somewhere in the 4.5-5 lbs. range.  It has nearly zero take-up and is crisp as most of us would want on a duty gun.

25 rounds, 7 yards, S&B 230gr FMJ

One of the things I like to do at 7 yards is see how many out of 25 I can land within the X ring.  Considering it was my first time out and it was an indoor range with kinda crappy lighting, I'll take it but, I'm not completely satisfied.  I know the TRP is capable of much better.  I'm eager to take it outside and have some fun with it.

What else did I learn from the TRP?  Well, I thought the front strap checkering on the frame would be more abrasive than it was.  Felt good!  My shooting hand was no worse for the wear after 100 rounds of factory FMJ and 7 Federal Hydrashok 230gr +P that I tested for functionality and POI.

The TRP is absolutely the tightest-fitting 1911 I've ever owned.  No rattles, no looseness whatsoever, yet, the slide cycles silky smooth like a lot of custom-fitted 1911's I've handled in the past.  There's no way I'm getting the barrel bushing loose without a barrel bushing wrench, though, and I can't seem to find where the heck I put mine at the moment.

Anyway, if you've been riding the fence about a good 1911 for <$1500, I'll recommend the TRP without any reservations.

Ran another 100 rounds thru the TRP this afternoon without any issues.  This time I moved the target out five yards further than my first range trip - to 12 yards and expected my groups to open-up accordingly and...they just didn't.  Usually, an increase in target distance results in a corresponding increase in group size but, not this time and not with this gun.

25 rounds, Geco 230gr FMJ, 12 yards

That was my best 25 round group of the day, again, just trying to get a feel for the TRP and a sense of its dynamics.  It's still a brand new pistol to me and if there's one thing I've learned about 1911's over the years it's that they're all a little different and each one has its own set of quirks.

Some owners have experienced the TRP's two-piece full-length guide rod loosening after 100-150 rounds, requiring a quick re-tightening with the included hex wrench.  Mine did loosen by about 1/4-turn after the first range trip last week.  This week, though, it didn't loosen at all and I checked it twice: once after 50 rounds and again after 100.  Hmmm.  The only difference between the two trips to the range was that I did a full field-strip, clean and lube before heading-out yesterday but I doubt if that had anything to do with it.  I guess it just wasn't torqued as tight from the factory as I thought it was.  Everything else on the TRP was certainly tight as a drum.

The TRP's grip safety takes noticeably more effort (and a slightly higher grip) to ensure it's disengaged, compared to my Sig, Colts and Dan Wesson.  Not complaining.  It's just different but I could see where it might be annoying to some new owners at first.  Considering how well the TRP performs, I can definitely forgive it.  It's incredibly pleasant to shoot, accurate as hell and 100% reliable with the four brands of factory ammo I've shot so far.  ;)

Thanks!  I started noticing some good deals on production guns around the end of June and by the time the 4th of July sales started, I was seeing the stainless TRP for about $255 less than I had seen it previously on-sale.  Had to go for it.  She's definitely a looker and a shooter.

Vacation time + beautiful weather = pin practice!  Yes!  I've got a couple of weeks to dial-in before my club's next monthly bowling pin match and just wanted you all to see my first two mags thru the TRP.  Yowza.  This thing definitely has potential to be a great range toy for games like pin matches.  Unfortunately, SA only includes 7-round magazines so I ordered a couple of 8-round Wilson Combat magazines off Brownells.  I'm sure they'll work just fine.  I've never experienced any problems with WC mags in any of my other 1911's.

It was nice to have the whole range to myself while I shot several five pin-relays with vary degrees of success, going thru two boxes of Geco 230gr FMJ and a half box of S&B 230gr FMJ before I even knew it.  I didn't bother timing myself.  Didn't need to.  I know I was slow as heck but, speed comes after learning POI and getting comfortable with a new gun.  This 1911 has proven very easy to get to know.  I'm hoping to get out again tomorrow afternoon and run some speed drills with it. ;)

Nice looking firearm.

I was never a fan of 1911s. I was the Ships Armorer my last year and a half or so when in the USN...I had a bunch to take care of and it developed into a distaste for the platform.

However...I caught a deal on a SIG 1911 in .357 SIG that I just couldn't pass up. I still don't consider myself a 1911 fan boy but I do love that SIG. The SIG is a FAR cry from the 1911s I dealt with on the ship. The SIG is tight, screams "quality" and is extremely accurate...I shoot it well.

I didn't stop at the SIG and purchased a S&W 1911 that is a nice gun but I think I have scratched my 1911 itch, and I no longer have a "distaste for the platform".

SAI TRP pistols represent a fine mid-tier 1911 in all of the best ways.  Great craftsmanship, most if not all desirable features for a full-size 1911 (beavertail, checkering, magwell, etc.).  Loved mine while I have certainly would have kept it if I didn't get an outstanding trade value towards a Dan Wesson (the next step up in my unprofessional opinion).

No lie!  And if you DON'T keep an eye on them, they multiply when you're not looking!   :o
