My Kid Bought A New Pistol

My son has been planning on buying a 1911 for some time and has been saving for it.  Thought hard about
his options but in the end decided he wanted a Colt.  At first thought he would get a Classic or Government
model, but then announced he was increasing the budget and would save longer.  Kind of settled on a
Wiley Clapp but had never seen one, so we headed to the LGS to see what they had.  One of the guys there
is a 1911 guy, so we talked with him and explained what my son was thinking.  He thinks a minute, and says,
how about something better?

Built in 1997, it's been sitting in a safe ever since and doesn't look like it's been shot.  He came in at the bottom
of his budget, and less than a used Wiley Clapp we saw on GunBroker.  Darn kid...

The only "bad" thing I could say about it is that it might be a good idea to replace the recoil spring with a GI spring unless he's only going to shoot target grade 185 grain ammo in it.  I've seen two of them (Colt Gold Cups) with short/light recoil springs in them as they came out of the box.  No idea what the spring weight/power was, I just noticed they were shorter than my Government Model springs when we were having a cleaning session after the range session.

All my 1911's are Colts.  I've had a couple other brands, but I only kept the Colt pistols.

Ahhhh 1911’s, my first love.  I’m too fickle to stick with just one platform but shooting a 1911 is like coming home to an old friend. 

I shot Steel Challenge last night with a .22 Marvel conversion on top of a 1911 frame (STI Trojan).  I’ve had that STI for a long time and have 40K+rnds thru it, so it’s definitely an old friend.  After shooting DA/SA Shadow 2 or striker fired P10C for most of the last year it was definitely nice to go back to a 1911 trigger and that particular gun.

Thanks for the suggestion.  This pistol came with 2 springs: one stronger one for normal loads and a lighter one for light target loads.  We haven't shot it yet so no idea how they'll work out, but we do
reload  so we'll get a chance to try them both at some point.

The store got it, and a pile of other guns from an estate belonging to a collector.  They said five safes full
of cool guns, all in great condition and showing little or no signs of use.  It was a lucky find, I think.
It came with original box, paperwork, test target, tools, magazines: the works.

My kid is a tradition minded guy, so he's been interested in a 1911 for quite a while.  Nether of us has any experience shooting one, so we're both looking forward to it.  I really appreciate it when my son buys cool guns that I can shoot...

Finally got a chance to mess with the Colt.  Before we headed to the range we gave it a basic cleaning.  It obviously had
been in the safe for a while: all the lubricants were gummed up.
