CZ 557, New Fan Favorite or Not

Hello all,

Since I don't see a lot of discussion about the "new" 557 rifles, I would like to know what you, who own or have shot them think.  Is it a winner or dud when compared to the 550 design.

Let me put it this way, for small to medium game a push feed is OK. I'd never accept anything but a controlled feed for a dangerous game rifle.

I picked mine up from Buds and have hunted two seasons with it now, I have taken two deer and a couple of hogs with it, it's in 6.5x55. The trigger is nice and light (to my finger) and breaks clean. Accuracy was also very good, for me-  the rifle can outshoot me. The stock I am not so pleased about, but I'm not exactly displeased either. I just don't get making the stock longer than on a 550 standard. My understanding is that the checkering is done the way that it is as a cost saving measure, it works even though it doesn't look as nice as a solid checkering panel would. In times like these, when so many manufacturers are producing plastic stocked budget rifles with plastic trigger guards molded into the stocks and annoying safety mechanisms in the trigger...it really shines. I don't hunt dangerous game, just deer and hogs.

I haven't been able to find much talk or owner reviews on the 557 since it came out.

I have a 550 American in 6,5x55 but I wanted a stainless.
Got me a Ruger m 77 HAWKEY all weather also in 6,5x55 has CRF.

I picked up a new 557 Carbine in 6.5 Swede for a little over $500. They're discontinued now, so they're on sale. The new triggers are about the same as on the new 457 rimfires, which I already own. Big improvement over the old 452/455 triggers. Adjusting the trigger is way easier. The 557 seems every bit as nice as the CZ rimfires. Have not been able to shoot it yet, but fit & finish are excellent. The old 550 was nice, but the price point was edging into really premium terratory. If you're hunting dangerous game, you're probably not buying a "cheap" rifle anyway. Push feed action on the 557 is the same as 90% of all modern rifles. If you won't have a push-feed, your choices for an affordable new bolt action are pretty slim. On the down side, the goofy bolt release is pretty bad on the 557, but not a deal-breaker. Can't think of any reason I'd need to remove the bolt in a big hurry. I expect CZ to improve that design eventually. Overall, the 557 seems worth it at around $700, but it's just a no-brainer at $500.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the bolt release. It is a pain, but as you say not a deal-breaker. Guess they have to cut corners when they can. Just glad they still produce rifles made from steel and wood, without plastic floor plates and/or trigger guards, unlike the budget rifles of so many other manufacturers.
