Advice on this kind of odd 512 American at GrabaGun..
« on: August 20, 2019, 09:38:15 PM »
Yo all

I have a 455 Trainer that I love..

also have a Ruger 10/22 synthetic that I havent even had the opportunity to shoot ( basic model )

I know I dont like the 10/22 sights so I bought a little Vortex scope, not even installed.  Plus I have the improved Ruger trigger ( still in package )...

As much as Im a CZ fanboy.. I drool over the 512 American , walnut checkered stock .. but dont have the funds for the $450+ purchase..

I found this 512 American on Grabagun for $300 bucks !

kind of an oddball .. a 16.5” barrel, NO sights, black beechwood WITH a threaded barrel...Dont have a suppressor but one is on my bucketlist..

I have a scope so the no sights isnt a problem  .. I can sell my 10/22 and churn a couple hundred bucks pretty easily..

I will be target shooting ... not hunting.. so precision shooting is my goal

Ive read where the 16.5” barrel is not inherently less accurate than 20” , 24”, or 28” except possibky sight picture w iron sights... which shouldnt be a factor ( for me ) as I intend to use my little Vortex..

Ive read where: bullet speed is actually reduced in a longer barrel so it can be more accurate because you dont deal w the supersonic / subsonic transition in flight..

* perhaps using sub sonic ammo in a 16.5” barrel would even the benefit of a longer barrel

Here’s the link: https://grabagun.com/cz-512-american-22lr-16-5-sr-tb.html

and it comes with a 25 round mag ( I called ‘em to confirm )

This model does NOT show up in any CZ catalogs, even “ discontinued “

GrabaGun rep said CZ sometimes makes unique / limited runs for distributors...

What are your thoughts on this model, especially as it would compare to the 10/22 I already have ??

I may be able to swing this CZ for about $100 out of pocket... or theres always pony up for the checkered Walnut model

your advice appreciated

-Mark

Nice setup........just wanted to let you know the wood version is NOT a walnut stock, more like a stained Fir/Pine.....sorry to have to tell you that.  But as far as this one goes, can't really see a reason not to pick it up, the stars are aligned you might say.  10/22's are like farm equipment, built to do a job but not very inspiring IMO.  The 512, well.....IS inspiring  :)

Hey Guardian tnx for reply

so do you have an opinion re accuracy of the 16.5” barrel ? .. its not a bull barrel ( ie. Varmint )

for what it’s worth, my brother has a 512 American .. looks beautiful.. and CZ says its Turkish Walnut
( and it has checkering ).. versus the 512 which I think is plain beechwood

Ahhh........"American", missed that point in my haste.......yes, it is Turkish Walnut.  Barrel length as far as bullet speed isn't an issue, for accuracy over a "long" distance it may suffer somewhat but not anything a good scope can't correct, but then again that can be said at any distance ;)   My 512 was a Magnum, really liked it........sold it a few years ago to try something different but would get another in a heartbeat.

It appears to be the barrel from the 512 Tactical (16” barrel, threaded/screw cap) dressed up in less menacing-looking “traditional” furniture. I think that was in the CZ-UB lineup a couple of years ago; perhaps clearing out some inventory and shipped to the States.

I have the 512 carbine and the 10/22 carbine (wood stock) and they are both fine shooters, I won't be selling either anytime soon. The 512 has a definite edge in the accuracy department. The 10/22 trigger will be more customizable for sure and add a bolt buffer and your done. I would suggest you get both if funds allow, they are both fine rifles.
