Refinishing question
« on: August 29, 2019, 08:17:28 AM »
I intend to get my CZ75 Compact refinished.  The polycoat has worn through/off a couple times now.  Cold bluing made it look nice for a few days and then wore through again (kydex holster).

At the gun show the other day there was a table with a big banner above for a refinishing company here in VA.  I stopped, asked the guy about the finishes/treatments they apply and he told me cerakote and durakote.  He said cerakote was more durable but durakote was better for some applications (don't remember those).

I asked about the nitride and DLC coatings and he told me cerakote was just as good as those when it came to durability.

I'd heard both were more durable than cerakote.

We have a combination (on the forum here) of experience with different finishes/treatments and vendors who do refinishing.  So I thought I'd ask here if, in forum member experience, cerakote is as durable as nitride and dlc coatings/treatments?
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Cerakote and Duracote are spray on treatments and for all intents and purposes they are just paint. They have a high level of durability but really are not much better than the CZ Polycoat.
Nitride is on a level all it's own and that's what CZ is using on the P-series guns and it's tougher than ANYTHING sprayed on period. Many gun companies are using nitride in one form or another,Sig Nitron,Dan Wesson Duty Coat, Glock Tennifer, S&W Armonite are examples.
My Polycoated PCR has been carried for 10 years and 14,000 rounds now and it shows. The Polycoat is well worn in all the average holster contacts as well as from being cleaned. I haven't carried the P-07 as much but it has been beat around and fired over 10,000 rounds and there is not the slightest sign of wear on the nitrided slide finish.Tough stuff.

I second that. Nitride blows away cerakote and for sure duracoat. Out of duracoat and cerakote, I would pick cerakote for metal. Duracote would be fine for say a polymer frame.

Primary machines cerakoted my P-09 slide, it's been in and out of a kyrex holster numerous times
The slide absolutely shows know wear whatsoever.
YMMV

Nitride has been the most durable in my experience, DLC the prettiest . DLC held up very nicely, but I didn't carry that gun as much(hunting pistol). Primary offers nitriding at a very competitive rate.

The only reason he told you Duracoat was as good as nitride was because he can't do the nitride finish. I have stripped a couple of nitrided guns and, let me tell you, there is absolutely no comparison. The nitriding changes the metal's molecular structure on the surface, to the point that it can't even be rust blued.
No matter where you're going, there you are.
