Considering a new CZ Rimfire .. advice appreciated
« on: September 05, 2019, 07:48:02 PM »
Maybe you can all help me put a rope around all my thoughts...

bought a CZ Trainer . 22LR from my brother as he got a Lux.. so I nabbed it as it was a pretty good deal..

it shoots great w iron sights but I know with my old crappy eyes I will be limited at distances..

Now learning the stock is designed with its slope for best use w the iron sights, versus scoped

so I started looking at 512 American w no iron sights as its designed to be scoped

but .. learning the 512 trigger is kind of a dead end in that there are no adjustments , no aftermarket upgrades, spring kits etc.. .. cant swap barrels .. and bolt action is inherently more accurate than semi auto..

my main use / goal will be target shooting, accuracy .. ( not hunting etc )

so shifted my attention to ie a 455 with a straight stock.. ie. American or perhaps better - Varmint barrel..

then Im wondering if a cheek pad would suffice to improve the hold, and high scope rings would let me enjoy the Trainer I have with a scope..

I found a 512 American locally available at a good price .. ( with checkered Turkish walnut stock that looks great)  but I already have a basic 10/22 ... semi auto and would really like to pursue accuracy

so:

Advice welcomed !

Keep the Trainer.  Use a cheek pad riser to get you in line with the scope.

Great to learn a riser will work well w scope on the Trainer.. can benefit from the inherent open sights, AND opt for scope when I want

tnx Deltapapa & Curtis for yr advice..

* curtis: what rings would you suggest ? .. & tnx for the link for the riser !

You didn't say what kind of scope you have in mind, and without that it's hard to
recommend rings.   My son has a Trainer which is used at the range and as a plinker,
so a low power scope was enough.  He has a Weaver rimfire scope, which was chosen
in part because the ocular bell diameter was small enough to mount it pretty low and still
provide bolt clearance.  His rings are Warne .400 medium height rings.  With that
setup, we shoot without a cheek pad.  The Weaver is a modest scope though, so if you're
looking at something bigger, then taller rings and a cheek pad will be needed.

Hi canthelpit,

My current scope is a little Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 .. 1" tube ( currently mounted on my Ruger 10/22.. )

I'll need rings that mount the to the 11mm dovetail.. or get a dovetail/picatinny rail ..

Might consider an additional scope for the Trainer.. which pretty much opens Pandoras box re: which scope to get..

The Warne mounts we used are good for 11 mm dovetails as is: no adapter required.  Ours is a 721M which they call a medium
mount.  They also have a taller mount (722) in the same style which it looks might be better for the larger scope you have in mind.
Here's the Warne web page reference:  https://warnescopemounts.com/product/722-1-inch-7-322-medium-rings/

Our scope is a 28mm scope.  It just fits: as low as we could get it with bolt handle clearance, and short enough to clear the rear sight.  Anything
larger would have needed taller rings.

Hope this helps.

If your scope is 11" or less, it will fit behind the rear sight without sight removal and allows you to mount the sight a little lower since you do not have to go over top of teh sight.

I have done this before a few times over the years.  The Weaver V-7 and V-9 work good for this.  Add some QD rings and it makes it have dual versatility.
