need some guidance regarding SP-01 and other 75 variants
« on: September 09, 2019, 08:44:33 PM »
Hi all! I'm new to guns and to the forum. I got my first gun, a P-10C (suppressor ready) about a month ago and love it. I'm looking to get a second gun and have decided that I want to try an all-metal, full or compact (not sub compact) hammer fired 9mm. Probably prefer DA/SA with a decocker. This will be a range gun - something I can shoot alongside my P-10C for some variety.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward an SP-01 Tactical (the reason I'm posting in this forum), though I have not yet had an opportunity to fire one. Here's what I've either shot or had in my hands and what I thought of them. Hopefully that'll give you a good picture of what works for me and my hands.

My P-10C: Have shot over 1000 rounds through it and it works great for me.
Shadow 2: Shot a couple of mags and it was really nice, but outside my budget. Almost too easy to shoot.
Beretta 92fs: Shot a couple of mags but didn't fit my hands too well. The grip was a bit too large.
75B: Dry fired and wanted to like it, but I couldn't reach the trigger without shifting my hand for the DA pull.
SP-01 Tactical: Dry fired one and it fit me well, even for the DA pull.

So, I'm looking for some advice. Given that the DA reach on the 75B was too far for my hands, would a P-01 or 75 D PCR be a better fit? Are there any full size 75 variants that might work for me? Any other recommendations?

I'm new to this, so if I left any pertinent info out or something doesn't make sense because I don't know what I'm talking about just let me know. Thanks!

Thanks. That's what everyone seems to say in all of the videos & forums I've seen, and it ticks all the boxes for me. I may end up getting one without having the chance to fire one first.

Anyone else have any experience with the DA reach of an SP-01 vs. 75B vs. P-01/PCR?

Length of pull is going to be very close on all the models you listed. I believe the reason the SP-01 tactical was a good fit for you, is that it has a more deeply curved trigger than the 75B. This is known as the "recurve" trigger. The PCR usually comes with a deeply curved trigger as well. The P-01 frame has the same dimensions as the PCR, but usually ships with a different trigger than the PCR.
The SP-01 tactical is nice, but the decocker makes it a little harder to work on if you decide to improve it later. Some people find the recurve trigger to be uncomfortable when shooting. A popular upgrade is a reach reduction kit with an adjustable 85C trigger.
Another option is installing thin flat grip panels to make the grip thinner and make reaching the trigger a little easier.

Thanks a bunch, Earl. Good info. Trigger shape isn't something I've been conscious of. I'll be more aware next time I try something new.

Good to know about those modifications, too.

The 75B and Tactical have the same frame geometry so I would assume the reach to be the same.  If you have small hands then get the reach reduction kit as mentioned.  You will want the flatter profile 85C trigger too.  The recurve trigger has a tendency to irritate your trigger finger after a while.

I would assume that the P01/PCR would have the same reach as the full size variants?  I've never measured but I think the main difference is slide and grip lengths are shorter on the compacts.

The tactical is a fine gun and a joy to shoot.  I have fully reworked the trigger on it, it is slightly more difficult to work on but don't let that make your decision.  You should decide whether you want to have a decocker or a safety (SP-01 Tactical vs SP-01 respectively) model.  The other decision is whether you want a gadget rail or not (SP-01 vs 75B).  The SP-01 will have a slightly softer recoil due to the extra weight up front.  The 75 series will be a little better balanced in the hand and it may be slightly faster on transitions.

Cheers,
Toby

Thanks, Toby. I was able to shoot a stainless matte 75B last night and actually wasn't too bad as far as how it fit me. The extra weight compared to my P10C felt nice. I do prefer the decocker over the safety, so I'll likely end up with the SP-01 Tactical and I'll be checking out the trigger mods.

One other thing to consider, the 75B series typically have a down swept beaver tail.  Most (if not all) prefer the up swept beaver tail found on shadow and SP-01 variants.  It looks like the stainless variants also have the up swept as well.

Cheers,
Toby
