Ammo choice for competition shooting
« on: September 15, 2019, 05:20:11 PM »
I noticed at my local range that  the most experience shooters are usually shooting something in the 124-147 gr. range or shooting reloaded subsonic ammo.
What would be your choice?

If you don't reload your own, I believe Wobbly posted a list of good reloaders somewhere on the Forum.
Or new ammo off the shelf, Federal Syntech 124gr might work for you.

I was talking to a guy at a match today that was using Syntech. He said he liked it and it was relatively clean shooting. Cheapest he could find it was .24/rd in bulk. Ouch, reloading has spoiled me.

I found 124gr currently in-stock at SGAMMO for ~21 cents

They also carry 147gr if that's your preference.

But may not ship to Left Coast.

I don't shoot in competitions, except trying to see what loads or what pistols shoot the best groups for me.

My CZ 9MM pistols, whether plastic (P09) or aluminum frame/steel frame (CZ75 Compacts, P01s) shoot the smallest groups for me with 115 grain ammo.

I've not tried much 124 grain ammo.  What little I have tried (Winchester 124 grain NATO and Remington 124 grain FMJ) did not do as well in the P01 as it does in the M&P 2.0 5".  On the other hand, the 115 grain ammo that the CZs like doesn't shoot very well in the M&P.

I have not shot anything 147 I the CZ's (or the M&P) that isn't beaten badly by the lighter bullets.  I've bought/shot Winchester 147 grain hollow points and FMJ in the P01 and it's a waste of money.  I've shot reload lead, coated lead and plated 147's in the P09, the CZ75 Compacts and the P01 and I'm wasting my time/money.  I haven't given up on them as I have too many 500 and 1000 bullet boxes of them to just give up.  I've bought some Tite Group and AA#7 to develop loads (Tite Group isn't showing much promise so far).

Store bought 115 grain FMJ from Federal gives me excellent groups in the P09, the CZ75 Compacts and the P01.  This is the Federal with brass cases.  I've bought a box of the aluminum cased stuff to shoot some day when the snow is on the ground so I haven't gotten around to trying those yet.  I've tried 115 grain FMJ Winchester and the groups are poor and the pistol is much dirtier afterwards.  I've got some Remington 115 grain FMJ to try in the CZs as it didn't do well in the M&P either.

I have some 124's but just haven't gotten around to trying them yet.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I can get 1100 rounds of 9mm within their $16 flat-rate shipping weight. That gets me to ~22.5cents landed at my door.  ;)

1. You need to place a location in your profile. Judging by your screen name, most of the suggestions made so far might not apply.

2. You need to tell us what your use intended use is. For longer distances, the higher velocity of a light weight bullet might be preferred. For knocking down steel, a heavy weight bullet might be preferred.

Thanks.

124 Gr JHP with Sport Pistol @ 1060 FPS for about 130 PF.

Exact recipe I use.  Very common for me to put two bullets through one hole in my local IDPA matches.

In the EU we usually shoot European brands.
I believe Lapua is the widely accepted golden standard of match ammo.
Most people shoot Fiocchi, S&B and Geco (although its Hungary made ammo is really dissapointing).

Based upon weight options I'm guessing 9mm - correct?  Or is this 38 super or 9x21 etc.

What Wobbly said....

however, for me 115 for steel challenge, 124 for knocking steel down.  124 PD JHP for the best accuracy.
