Scorpion Micro With Suppressor - Any Issues?
« on: October 15, 2019, 10:43:50 AM »
I got my SiCo Omega 9K out of NFA jail at the end of last week.  I purchased the Harvester Direct Thread Plate (same threads as the Alpha DT mount, but shortens the whole mix by .5in).  My POI shift was bit extreme, and it is because there are small shaves off of the end-cap upon bullet exit.  When I say shave, I mean the ever so-slightest, but its leaving a small amount of material behind.

Bullet shaved can on bottom/left, sent bullets high and right several inches at 15 yards, increasing with distance.

No baffle strikes thankfully.

I tested same can on several pistols (swapped direct thread to piston) and had no issues whatsoever, and little if any notable POI shift at same or more distances, so it comes down to either the direct-thread mount, or the barrel threads not being concentric.

Low-hanging fruit is I bought an alpha mount direct thread (made specifically for Omega series), as well as a fixed piston drop-in, to see if either resolve the issue.  Obviously I would prefer to leave the direct thread adapter in-place, but if the piston device works, perhaps I will go with that.

If nothing works, then it is a call to CZ CS to see what's next.

Any others go through this or similar?  Advice?

TIA

I have not done that, but you are wise to change the thread adapter first.  I have a couple of factory threaded barrels and they are straight as an arrow and concentric.

Though I realize that anything is possible and I'm not saying that it COULDN'T happen of course.  But stacking tolerances are often to blame.  You have the barrel threads, then the thread adapter threads, then the suppressor threads.

That's a lot of threads to have to be dealing with.

I would discontinue use of the can until you can get a guide rod and check the new thread adapter.  just because a bullet has barely grazed and kissed the endcap, doesn't mean that another could have slightly less or more powder charge and be enough of a difference that it would take a big chunk out of it the next time you pull the trigger.

You can buy guide rods from McMaster-Carr cheaper than anywhere else.  They're about $6 plus shipping.

Also, do NOT use a piston on the scorpion fixed barrel gun.    If you're using a piston on the suppressor without a fixed barrel mount, that's probably why you're having problems.  Boosters only go on semiauto's with non-fixed barrels.

Will get the rod.

Agreed on the potential for tolerance stacking, hence why i have several other parts in the mail to address.

The option for running the piston/Nelsen device is the Fixed Barrel Spacer, which replaces the spring (but keeps the piston in-place).  This renders the device immobile, however, agreed 100% on desire to get to a fixed attachment as the more parts, the more opportunity for something to go wrong.

no....first run on the scorpion was with a fixed barrel adapter (only used the piston on my proper pistols (Glock 17, 19, Beretta M9A3).  I am thinking the fixed barrel cap is ever so slightly out of alignment, so want to try the other options.

The POI shift is significant on the Scorpion Micro - WAY more than it should be.  My first thought was the can, but based on other testing this is obviously not the case.

Will be trying on my Tavor 9mm as well when that adapter arrives as well - but the purpose of this can is really to live on the Scorpion so hoping to get this resolved a somewhat easy way.

I have run a few ammo types so far...mostly 158Gr Sub, some 147Gr Sub, and a little 115Gr regular loads.  Will stay away from the latter until I can confirm POI moves back from whence it came.

The USPS dropped off a new SiCo Alpha direct thread mount today. Got to the range for a quick session. Put 50 rounds of Fiocci 158gr sub-sonic through the Scorpion and all is well. POI returned to where it’s supposed to be, no more evidence of new end cap strikes. Must have been some level of tolerance stacking but in its current index (slightly different than before) everything is as it should be!

I’m very excited to not have to send anything off. The can is now working on everything I wanted to mount it to. Guess I’ll have to buy something for my rifles now.....
