What subsonic ammunition for Scorpion
« on: November 02, 2019, 09:53:48 AM »
I was shooting a Scorpion suppressed with 147 grain 'subsonic' ammunition, but was still getting a very 'cracky' report, so I do not think the rounds were subsonic.  I presume the advertised muzzle velocity is in a pistol barrel, like 5" long, and since the barrel on a Scorpion is longer, the advertised 1050 is closer to 1150, or some such.

Has anyone chronoed 'sub sonic' rounds to see if they are truly?  And does anyone have a recommendation for subsonic ... or do I need to go off and hand load to reduce the load?

I’m going to pick up some 147 and 165 grain projectiles today....along with a chrono.
I’ll find out soon enough what I need for subs out of a 16” barrelled Scorpion.

Mine is set up with an HBI micro k barrel, 5.3" or 5.5 " , can't remember which. I use 158 gr Fiocchi subsonic and they work great.

I’ll tip another nod to the 158gr Fiocci.

My Scorpion Micro with Omega 9K runs the Super Vel 147, 900 FPS hush puppy ammo like a champ too. They make “training” loads in 100 and 200 round packs which are essentially once used brass reloaded at a far less obnoxious $30 per 100 vs their first grade ammo at $35 per 50. I’ll give them credit, their ammo is SUPER quiet and consistent. The 147 load is no good in regular pistols however.

Can anyone confirm that the 147g Speer Lawman or 147g Blazer Brass stay subsonic with a 7.5" pistol length bbl while running a can?

Had a chance to do some testing at the range last Friday. Out of the 5 different "subsonic" rounds that I tested, 147g Speer Lawman had a 10-shot average of 1126fps and 147g Blazer Brass had a 10-shot average of 1123fps. Both of these rounds went super multiple times during the testing session. The max recorded for the Lawman was 1140 and the Blazer was 1133.

All shots were from Scorpion SBR with 7.5" bbl, tri-lug mounted YHM Wraith 9mmXL suppressor. Ambient temp was 74F.

Fiocchi 158 grain subsonics are my go to.

I'll add that 150g S&B, 147g Remington UMC and 147g Rattlesnake Tactical all stayed well under my condition's supersonic threshold which was 1128 fps that day.

FWIW - the difference between my Evo Carbine’s 16” barrel and my ’s 4.75” barrel looks to be about 200fps straight across the board with all the different ammos I tested.
