CZ SP 01 9mm barrel change to .40 s&w
« on: November 06, 2019, 08:12:29 AM »
If I want a sp01 tactical in .40, it looks like I'll have to get creative. How many parts will I need to change to transform  9mm into a .40? Can I just change the barrel and recoil springs? Or is it more involved? I know the barrel may need to be massaged.

Please let me know how involved this is. My thinking is it may be better to get the .45. Depending on how much work is involved for a 9/40 transformation, I could come out ahead with just swapping a barrel.

Thanks

The slide has to be changed as well as the barrel, because a 40 barrel won't fit your SP-01 slide, and the slide's extractor and breechface would have to be modified to accept a 40 case.

Prob easiest to buy a TS in 40.  https://czcustom.com/new-firearms/cz-pistols-custom/cz-75b-sa-40-custom.html

Actually, the SP-01 9mm barrel is the same OD as the 75b 40.  I fit a 9mm barrel to my 75b SA .40 with minor fitting and it works great. Only change is recoil spring and guide rod.

It is easier to chamber a 9mm on a 40 slide than the other way around.  Try to slide a 40 under the extractor of a 9mm slide...

The way that i understand it, a slide with a 9mm breach face will not except a 40 S&W cartridge case head. So in some cases you can go from 40 ----> 9 but not from 9 ----> 40.

exactly correct. I have run my .40 cal SP-01 as a 9mm by dropping in a 9mm barrel and recoil spring, but .40 cal won't feed in a 9mm SP-01 with a .40 cal barrel. Jams up on the breech face.

So I'd have to get a gunsmith involved. Well looks like I'm going to own my first 9mm. Been looking into rounds found LE +p at buds and ammo seek. Also reeds and sg ammo.

Thanks everyone for the info. NOW YOU KNOW!! haha!!

No, you don't need a gunsmith. You'd need a .40cal slide and barrel.

In all the threads on this subject I've never seen anyone share pictures of a 9MM slide they'd had machined to use a .40 S&W barrel.

Maybe it's a combination of very expensive or just not possible/worth it considering the cost vs. the benefit.

You could keep your eyes open for a .40 S&W slide/barrel.  See them for sale every now and then.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
