Private sellers shipping options?
« on: January 06, 2020, 07:42:29 PM »
Has anyone with a FFL license used FedEx or UPS to ship firearms?  Curious about the process and paperworks needed.  Thank you in advance for sharing.
WTB PM if you got any for sale:
CZ 75 SHORT RAIL (factory blued)
CZ 75 PRE-B (factory blued).

Asking bc if this is even allowed and if so what is the process involved since I've never done it. Is an FFL license required to sell?

No you do not need a FFL license to sell your own pistol. You should take a look at this excellent resource https://www.shipmygun.com/go/

Thanks that is a helpful resource.  What was your experience using their services?  Also can FFLs ship directly to buyers or must they ship only to another FFL?  Thanks.

ONLY if the buyer is also an FFL holder. Non FFL persons must have all firearm purchases sent to an FFL and receive the gun from them and with fill out the 4473 plus whatever background check process is in place in that state.

Honestly I have not used that service, but I know some folks first-hand that have and it is GTG. I use my LGS because they are great about shipping out and do all the work for me. You may want to try some LGS near you to see what they charge. Typical is $30-$40

Understandable.  What consequences can occur to both the FFL dealer and the buyer, if something is not shipped from FFL to FFL?

I have always use a local gun shop but want to understand the whole process better. Thanks!

Does not have to be shipped by an FFL but many times it's cheaper as they can send via USPS flat rate. Does have to be shipped TO FFL no matter who ships it if out of state.  Long guns can be shipped USPS by individuals but handguns need to be FOR it shipped via USPS.  FedEx and UPS can be expensive because the have to be shipped next day.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

You dont want to go there.

If you are not an FFL, then you need to send to an FFL.  But....

 > make sure the receiving FFL is ligit. You can do that online by checking the FFL number.

 > Make sure the receiving FFL will ACCEPT from a NON FFL HOLDER, YOU.   They will require info such as drivers license copy/ID to receive the gun for their books.

 > The shipper may require proof of who you send to, so if you can, get an keep a copy of FFL with you at shippers.  If they ask, you can show proof.

 > most shippers require overnight/2nd day deliver (other than USPS), so expect to pay dearly.

 > I would also get adult signature and insurance if its worth anything

Excellent points.  Thanks for sharing and clarifying.

Where can you check an FFL online?  I've used gunbroker but if there are other databases would like to know for future reference.  THanks.

A bit off point perhaps, but one reason I let my FFL go was the increasing cost of shipping. 90% of my sales were online and during the 3 years I had my license I saw shipping costs increase so much that merely listing a shipping amount that would cover it, was enough to scare potential buyers away. At first I used a local shipper, when they became too expensive I made the 50 mile drive to the nearest FedEx hub. The last firearm I sold online was as an individual after I was no longer licensed, it was a long gun and the cost wasn't too terribly bad, but it wasn't good either.

Things being as they are, unless you're selling something expensive enough to make it worthwhile, I would try and sell at a gun show rather than online. I don't have anything I plan on parting with at the moment, but if I did that's what I would do, even though most of the gun shows I have attended weren't overflowing with good offers from the vendors.
It's not saving any water if you have to flush it over and over....

Ah so the shipping costs sounds like a large factor why it is good to ship FFL to FFL, got it.

So when you had an FFL license did you ever ship to an individual instead of a FFL?  Is the process any different than shipping directly to FFL?  Did I misunderstand your comment?  Thanks!

No one can ship directly to an individual. All firearms must be shipped to an FFL. Some doubt exists about sales within one's own state, but personally I wouldn't risk it. PM sent.
