Some load advise for the 527 in .221 Fireball?
« on: January 08, 2020, 10:34:27 AM »
A while back I had 527 Carbine in .223, very accurate but most boring rifle ever, especially when I already have the same 527 in 7.62x39. So I swapped that .223 for a 527 .221 Fireball.

My .221 load is 16.8gr 1680 with a 55gr FMJ. Nothing special about this load, just trying to use up my stock of 55g bullets that I bough for the .223.

I'm looking for a load that make the most out of the .221, and a load that mimic the performance of .22LR-.22Hornet range.

I know .221 shines with bullets around 35gr if the best velocity is desired, but I'm not sure which bullets have worked well in the real world.

The other intended use for my .221 is light loads, I wanted a .22 Hornet for a long time but figured the .221 is a superior cartridge without the fragile brass of the Hornet. So I am hoping to see if anyone had discovered a cast boolit load that works with the .221, set .224 boolit around the 40gr weight is hard to come by.

Midsouth shooters supply used to sell a nice 34 grain and 40 grain varmint bullets (Varmint Extreme name I believe).  The littles would really scream out of my old triple deuce 😊- should work very well out of a Fireball!

HP, Did you have your 223 re-barreled or find a 527 already in 221 FB? I am new here but am wanting a 527 in 221FB and figured I would have to have a 527 re-barreled to get there.

Mine is factory original, stamped 13, used, apparently the gun shop had problems moving it and it sat for years. I traded my like new 223 cabine which i find boring plus $200 for it.

The carbine was sold again before the weekend is out or so I was told.
