Questions about P-09

hi all.  i'm interested in possibly getting a P-09 for a home defense and range shooting pistol.  i like the 19 round capacity, price point and DA/SA.  however, i have never fired one.  my local range does not have one for rental. 

what can those of you that have this gun tell me about its stock trigger and shooting style compared to say, a Sig and/or H&K?  I know it has a bit lower bore axis than other DA/SA pistols, which is another reason why i'm attracted to it.

No experience with HK, but lots of past experience with X5 and P-226 all steel Sigs.  I can't compare late model polymer Sigs to polymer CZ's however. 

What I can tell you is that, mechanically, the P-09 is excellent.  The lock up is very tight and the gun is very accurate.  The trigger can be as nice as you want, with good aftermarket support. 

Ergonomically, it may or may not be a match for you.  I like an ovalized grip, so I modified my two P-09's by adding material to the sides of the grips.  Looks bad, works great.  But I have long fingers and long hands and this may not work for you.  The grip is not as rounded off as a 75B, but not as blocky as a Glock.  The sides of the grip are flat.  I was able to modify mine, but I had a lot of youtube viewers that thought that me modifying my own gun was somehow sacrilegious.   Ugly, yes. 

I can put up with an ugly gun that is good for consistent 6" groups at 100 yards, and 12" at 200 yards.    Go to JoeMustang99 on youtube if you want to see some P-09/07 assembly/disassembly videos and more shooting range videos than anyone has time to watch.

I have had a bunch of 229s, usp’s and hk 45s as well as the p07. Generally the cz is my preference but here are general thoughts: for trigger out of the box sig is a little better (Cajun kit will make the cz better than the sig) even just a little polishing and simple springs will make them even, hk is way behind unless you go lem. Cz controls recoil best for me and is very good ergonomically, hk in the P30l
Is better ergo wise but then again cz75 would be as good or better than those. Sig is a little less so but still good not as much grip for size and a bit blockier. Sig is worst in recoil control but not bad as they are heavier. Overall concealment goes to cz for me as they are thinner in key areas.

I own 3 P09s now. I have several DA/SA Sigs and several 92 series Berettas. I actually just got back from the range with my P09 and P07. I think the P09 is outstanding. The deal with the out of the box trigger is it can be different from gun to gun. My first P09, UG/SR, had a pretty good trigger out of the box and is now excellent. My second, OD green, P09 does not have as good of trigger. Not bad, but not as good as the UG/SR P09. My third as a a standard black P09 and it has the best stock trigger out of the three for sure. However, I have added a few CGW parts to all but the black one. The thing is the triggers on these guns really smooth out with use.

JoeL described the grip great. it reminds me of a 1911 grip with thin flat grips panels. I have small/medium hands and the trigger reach in DA works for me. The coating on the slide and barrel is excellent. Where the P09 shines to me is accuracy and recoil. These things are very accurate and recoil is super soft. The P09 has less felt recoil that my Sig MK25 and Beretta Elite LTT.

See if you can find someone with one and that will let you fire it. If you live in the Houston, TX area you are more than welcome to give mine a go.

I have a handful of CZ 9mms.  Of the bunch, my P-09 is my favorite and I shoot it the best.

You can add a bunch of Cajun Gun Works goodies, but if you're on a budget, you can add the extended firing pin and reduced power hammer spring, do the requisite polishing in the stickies on this site, and have one heck of a smooth shooting firearm.
Yes the CGW kits will make it better, but that one mod (extended firing pin/reduced power hammer spring) and the internal polishing made mine really smooth. 
I'd even take it over the 75B, and I have one of those too.  The Omega trigger system is much easier to work on and tune. 
I've never shot an HK, but I have shot a few Glocks and Sigs and again, I prefer the P-09.  I have a couple of P-07s as well and they conceal better but the P-09 is my baby.

It helps me a lot to think, "Where might this lead me ? In 6 months ? In 1 year ? In 2 years ?"

One thing is for sure... laying in the bedside drawer is not in the future for any CZ !!  ;D  These things are really fun to shoot because the ergonomics make them easy to hold, and therefore you'll simply shoot much better. CZ makes shooting enjoyable because you can actually hit something.

That presents the quandary. The P09 is really too big for most people to conceal easily. It's a good range gun, but not the best CZ for extended range work or competition. In short, it's a dedicated one-gun solution. It does everything OK, but being a "one size fit all", doesn't do any job really well. So if your interest grows, it can become a dead end.

If your schedule or income allow any expansion... If you think pistol ownership is going to expand your involvement in shooting sports.... range time, carry time, or competition time. Then, I'd much rather buy the P07... which can easily morph into a really fine home/ carry gun. Then, at some point in the future, buy a worthy and dedicated CZ range gun.

Here's the key to this topic... take a look at just how many CZ owners own more than one CZ. What are the odds you'll be in the group within 12 months ?

My P-09 is my second favorite pistol to shoot.... my first is the 75BD. Both are fully CAJUNIZED

As stated by the OP, range and home defense are perfectly good applications for a p09. As wobbly notes, concealed carry is less feasible with a p09 than a p07 or other more compact choices,  but ccw wasn't one of the stated uses the op intended.

If you want polymer, or want the switchable safety/decocker, or if the p09 is at the limit of your budget, then it's a great choice. On the other hand, if you want to really experience the greatness of cz, I would say a 75 variant is the way to go for getting your addiction started.  The gunsmithing to achieve a great trigger is slightly more involved than the omega trigger guns but still within the capability of a competent DIYer.   Don't over think this,  chances are that whatever cz you buy this week, next week you will be shopping for the next one in your collection

The most accurate center fire semi auto pistol I've ever shot is my P09 9MM.  Came new with about a 3.5 lb. SA trigger pull and 8&3/4 lb. DA trigger pull.  DA trigger pull really doesn't matter to me as it has the safeties installed and is shot SA, like a 1911.

The second most accurate center fire semi auto pistol I've ever shot is my P07 .40.  The SA and SA trigger pull, out of the box, was about 1/4 lb. less than the P09 listed above.  It is my EDC concealed pistol. 

As others stated, the P09 is bigger and harder to conceal effectively.  If it's not effective, it may not be concealed. 

That P09 pretty much stays in the bedroom with some extra mags and has an DI RMR and Streamlight on it.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

99% of people have no clue what's under your shirt. 1% Carry themselves, and they are the ones you don't worry about.

Comming off of 226 and a 228 for da sa love my po9 and 7.
They shoot great.  And have incredible support and most people and polish them up.   I say try 3 or 4 at a lgs.  You will see the triggers vary sometimes greatly.   

Get the best on and go from there
