SAR K2 45 WONT GO INTO BATTERY
« on: February 06, 2020, 08:07:21 PM »
My SAR K2 45 that I just got won't go into battery completely after racking the slide. Anyone have experience with this? Ammo I've tried with so far are Remington Golden Saber 230 GR and Federal FMJ 230 GR Aluminum Case. I have a couple pics on my phone but am unsure on how to upload.

Are you riding the slide home with your hand, or just dropping it on the catch (or by slingshot)?

Both. Neither method changes anything. Its as if bullet casing is too long which im sure is not the case. Should I try hitting the slide to propel it forward? Im afraid that might cause an accidental discharge or get the round really stuck in the barrel.

The bullet could be making contact with the barrel metal before the slide is fully forward.

If so (in my experience) it can be really difficult to get the slide to pull back to eject that cartridge from the chamber.  Once ejected, you should be able to see marks around the bullet where it is making contact.

But, if you're sitting at the house, field strip the pistol, remove the barrel, hold it in one hand muzzle down and drop a cartridge into the chamber.  If should drop right it and you should be able to hear the case mouth make contact with the end of the chamber in the barrel.

Then, you should be able to grab the rim with your thumb/finger and spin the shell inside the chamber.  And, it should pull out easily when you grab the rim with that thumb/finger.

If it won't drop in till you hear the metal to metal sound of the case mouth making contact with the end of the chamber, or you can't easily spin the cartridge while it's in the chamber then either the barrel isn't chambered correctly or the cartridge is too long (bullet not seated deeply enough.)

Some barrels and some bullet styles/brands/weights just don't work well together.  You might buy a different brand or bullet weight and not have any issues.  Or it could be the barrel is causing the problem.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Never ride the slide home, it's not designed to work that way.

If you've not shot it yet and it passes the 'plunk' test as described above, take it to the range, tap the slide home and fire a few rounds to see if it cycles under recoil (as it is designed to do), it may just need the recoil spring to run 'under power' as it were a few times.

Thank you both for the replies. It passed the plunk test. Now I just have to take it to the range and try to see if it will fire. Do you think there will be any chance of damage or it blowing up if I were to pull the trigger while its in its current state? Thats if I am not able to tap the slide home. I bought it off Gunbroker from EAA and it was classified as a "Manufacturer Sample" with no refund or return so I wonder if its even been fired before. I didn't want to pass up the deal so I pulled the trigger and here I am.

It won't fire out of battery.

With the pistol empty (chamber and no magazine), grab the grip/frame with the hammer down against the back of the slide.

Then, while you look at the hammer, grab the slide and slowly push it to the rear.  See how the hammer lifts up/away from the back of the slide?

That bottom edge of the slide (under the firing pin) contacts the hammer and pushes it backwards (which lifts the hammer off the firing pin area of the slide) and away from the firing pin.

What Grendel is telling you is to lock the slide back with the slide lock lever on the left side of the frame, point the barrel in a safe direction, insert a magazine and release the slide to chamber that round.

You can release the slide two different ways.  Either push down on the slide release lever without touching the slide, or grab the slide at the rear, pull it back till it stops and then let go of the slide.  That's basically what happens when you fire the pistol.  Nothing holds the slide back as the recoil spring pushes it forward to feed/chamber the next round in the chamber.

One other thing, recoil spring.  Does your pistol have the factory recoil spring in it?  Some people buy/install weaker recoil springs for competition.  If you change ammo you may have to change springs if it's an aftermarket lighter spring.

Just ordered an 18 LB Wolff Recoil Spring. Hopefully it will make a difference once installed. Will update after I fire it at the range.

I had one experience with a gun not going back to battery at the range. It was due to a cartridge being just the tiniest bit longer than the rest. It was bulk range ammo. I even loaded that bullet randomly in a mag several times and it did it every time like clockwork.

Took the pistol to a nearby gunsmisth and found the culprit. The barrel itself is the issue. It is short chambered. Sent off an email to the EAA sales rep that sold it to me off of Gunbroker and currently waiting for a reply. Due to it no longer being imported by EAA, more than likely I will not be getting another barrel but I do have my fingers crossed.  :-\ :'(

As far as reaming it on my own, I would be willing to do it but am afraid I would mess it up somehow. And no I have yet to fire the pistol.

What ammo are you using , reloads or factory ?

Do what the other guys said , in a safe direction load a magazine with the slide locked rearward.  Then press the slide stop and let the slide go forward at full power . Honestly sounds to me like your shirt stroking the slide or letting the slide drag a bit .
