Good Velocity for 9MM CZ 75B
« on: March 03, 2020, 09:53:30 PM »
I am working up loads for my new CZ 75 B.  I have been Chronoing and getting FPS out of the barrel from a little over 1000FPS to 1175FPS with different loads. The all seem about the same in tossing cartridges about 6 feet and I see no difference in accuracy.

Other than avoiding 1250 Feet per second and 900 FPS or so that(probably) will not cycle the firearm is there any general FPS number that you all  like better than another?

Thanks :)

For target ammo, 100% reliability and best accuracy are my standards. I don't worry about velocity.

welcome,

If you see no difference in accuracy, then why worry?

but what i do when i reload is to choose 10 rounds (w/o bullets crimped and i try load), dump the powder into my scale dish, weight it and divide by 10 to get an average.

Then i use that average to see if its + or - of what i was trying to throw.  from past experience the "average" is on the low side of that number i was shooting for.  That gives me an idea on my "average" weight and "average" velocity.

If all of my rounds made the gun go bang and the empties fly out, then its not a big deal on what else happens.

Since im reloading for "more bang for the buck", i will use the lowest powered charge.  Again, more bang for the buck (or pound of powder).

what you do is really up to you.  The above is how i do and think.

Welcome Aboard !

Like BangBang said, the only reason to worry about velocity is if you're shooting in a some sort of organized pistol competition, or want to avoid going over max load.

You say you are not seeing differences in accuracy, then I would question exactly how you are testing that. It's hard to test for accuracy over a chrono. I'd suggest you'd need to work up a 'ladder' of several loads (preferably 6 or more), and then shoot each string at a new target, all from the same sand bagged position, and all at the same set distance. You will definitely see a difference.

I like to shoot all mine at 10yds, although that seems a little short these days. But by keeping the same distance for all loads, I can compare targets across 20 years or more. I use the TQ-2 target (2.3" bull) which is 4x6 inches making them easy to store and keep. I like using masking tape to mark the loads, because it can be easily transferred to the target.

You'll see over time that your pistol has a definite preference for bullets and powder. It does not happen on the first outing.

Hope this helps.

well first Always shoot from a bagged position, shoot at an indoor range so you dont have problems with wind, rain or things like that.

And then this is what I do, all the 124 grains go on a scale, I look for exactly the same weight, all the loads are exactly matched on a scale, all cases are the same lenght, so when I start shooting(string of 10) I am 100% sure every one I shoot is exactly the same.

from that point on I only change the ammount of powder and find out what the gun likes the best aka gives me the best groups.

...and most importantly, all the cases are the same brand.
