Slide jammed out of battery
« on: May 02, 2020, 05:02:01 PM »
Took my safety model RAMI to the range today for a little trigger time since I will be carrying it a lot more as the weather warms. In the middle of shooting the slide just decided it wasn't going back in to battery. I tried the slide release, slingshotting and smacking the back of the slide, but it wasn't moving. RSO took a look and couldn't figure it out either, so I cleared it and finished up the trip shooting my P-01.

While I was packing up I decided to mess with it again. I turned it upside down, wiggled and yanked on the slide and it released. Field stripped it and couldn't find anything broken. I was out of ammo at this point, but I tried dry firing and some slide manipulations and everything seemed fine.

I'm only guessing, but I'd say it probably has about 2.5 to 3k rounds through it, all internals are stock, aside from some polishing I did a few hundred rounds ago, and I have not replaced any springs.

I've heard the the recoil springs should be replaced every 1.5k rounds, or so. Could that be the issue?

I was just about to order a pro package, so it would be a great time to replace springs, etc, but I'm a little concerned that it could be damaged now.

Anyone have any thoughts they'd like to share?

If this happened to me, I would most likely also be 'guessing" what was the reason of this failure.
If this was going to be my EDC gun I would ship it immediately to CZ and wait for their diagnosis and repairs and, in the meantime, I would carry my other CZ.

I was thinking about that as well, but are they even doing warranty work right now? Not that I couldn't wait, but I definitely won't be carrying it until I know it's resolved. I thought that it may be, at least, one of the reasons they suggest the recoil springs being replaced. If it's a known result then I would feel more comfortable replacing the springs and moving forward. I really should replace them anyway since I'm pretty sure I'm well above the 1,500 rnds suggested.

It could be something as simple as a piece of debris holding up the fpb lifter. When you cycled the gun upside down, maybe it dislodged. I would detail strip and clean the gun so you can test/diagnose the problem.

If you are between 2.5-3k, you are probably due for an outer recoil spring change (maybe even both inner and outer)

I'm guessing your firing pin block lifter spring is missing.   This must likely happened when you did your polishing.

If the lifter sticks up it will hold the gun out of battery.  The L spring is the one spring that gets damaged or lost the most when working on these guns.

Cheers,
Toby

No. It's working properly. It dry fired fine and I can see it lifting when I pull the trigger with the slide removed. I've probably put 3 to 500 rounds through it since the polishing.

I have a Rami, jamming issues. CZ warrenty and repair is open. A week ago they answered phone, sent me shipping label, then got an email they received gun.

I would definitely send it back for repair, everything is free and a CZ expert is troubleshooting it.

But is the spring there?   It will still get lifted up when you pull the trigger but it may not get pulled back down if the spring is missing.   Then the lifter gets hung up under the block when the slide attempts to return to battery.

Cheers,
Toby

With the slide removed you can verify the action of the lifter spring by simply pulling it upward with a finger. You should be able to feel light resistance from the spring and the lifter should snap back upon release.

It's not free if the gun is out-of waaranty.

There is tension on the lifter. If I manually lift the lifter it snaps back down both with and against gravity (right side up and down).

Upon further inspection I noticed this slight flattening on the inside edge of the slide. The metal has been reformed and you can feel it protruding inside the slide rail. I also noticed some damage to the frame that appears to follow the same path of the slide damage.
