Using an M die to check for stepped cases
« on: May 04, 2020, 11:26:44 AM »
OK, so I'm working up my first 9Maj load dev on the 650 and as such case processing and inspection is #1.
I got to thinking how it would be awesome to have some type of lockout on a stepped case when processing brass (Size/deprime only). Now I did find out that they someone makes these dies but they are like ~$100 each so no... just no...

Normally I just hot wash with no pins for 20 mins and call done. This batch has been hot washed, sorted, hotwashed with pins, and inspected. I had about 20 cases out of ~2k. I pulled the stepped cases out when I first hand sorted them. I found 2 more during inspection/handpriming process.

So...I began thinking, then I remembered I had a .30 cal Lyman M die. I stuck it in position 2 and it would have probably worked if the caliber had been correct. I know that you can buy the correct caliber heads for the M dies, but I think I'm just going to find the right size thread nut and go that route - primarily because the M dies have a flared head for straightening and belling the case. I need a flat disk shaped head that will fit in the 9mm case without flare, but catch on the ledge of the stepped case.

so....next time, I will try this out, but I wan't you guys opinions on if ya'll thank it will work or not. or other stuff tor try...

Just for giggles and WTFs...the M die came to me when I first started loading for Mosin .311 bullets. I couldn't find any .311 bullets locally only 308s so I tried paper patching the 308s up to 311s. Well that didn't work out all that great, the paper kept getting caught and ripped on the casemouth. I'll fix that with an M die - so I thought... It DID produce a decent looking 7.62 x 54R round holding a paper patched .308 150 gn spitzer. They did function, but shot like crap. like 16" group at 50 yds, but strangely no tumbling...

Got to look for bulged cases and brass shot in 9 Major as well !! You need a "roll sizer". https://www.rollsizer.com/

I could probably adapt a powder height alarm for you.

Were you meaning to insert a photo here, or were you using mental telepathy ?

There is now an M-die type of powder funnel for the Dillon powder measure. Might look for those...

Powder height alarm would be cool option, but sounds like $$$. The M die setup *should be easy, we will see.
Thx for the insight.

Could be visual and not an electronic buzzer.
