pistol optic help
« on: May 24, 2020, 12:54:18 AM »
been looking at some options here for a pistol optic. dont know alot about this, so thought i would ask. so far ive looked at the vortex viper and the holosun 507c. i plan on having the slide milled if i cant find one used. do i need to have it milled for specific optics? any opinions on an optic are most welcomed as well. oh, this will go on a CZ P07

I would recommend going with something with an rmr footprint if you are going to be paying to get it milled. It is "most likely" the most future proof footprint you can get.
If you go the viper route that footprint is pretty common too. I had a p07 slide that was milled for a viper and I also have a docter site c. The docter would not fit in the p07 mill space but both the docter and viper would fit plates made for the footprint, if that means anything to u.
I had a really negative experience with the battery trays on the gen 1 holosun optics. The gen 2 holosuns look to be much improved and I'm probably going to pick one up at some point, the 508t gen 2 is particularly appealing.
I don't know if I answered your question or not but there u go. The viper was a good optic for me and I have the most rounds on one of those even tho I sold it a year or 2 ago. The dpp is gaining rapidly tho

I have a mixture of dovetail, plate, and specific sight mills. I've used both Burris and Holosun sights.  I still have the dovetail mounts with Burris FF3 sights on a P-09 and a 97B"E".  I have CZC plates on P-10F OR and P-10S OR with the Holosun 507C sights on both.  My preference now is for the OR cut and CZC or CZ plates and Holosun 507C sight.  That gives you plenty of options--if something comes out that is "better" than a 507C, you can go to it.  Everything is very rigid and trouble free.  The sight is much lower on the gun than a dovetail.  The 507C sight has a very crisp 2moa dot with plenty of steps to set the intensity.  I have had no problems or failures using both Burris and Holosun sights, with many thousands of rounds through the Burris equipped pistols.  I'm still new to the Holosun but that is what I will buy from now on, but I'm not in any hurry to replace the Burris sights at all as they are fine as well.

I don't require co-witness on the match/demo guns so the height of the plate is of no concern to me.  Milling for a specific optic should make co-witness easier since the optic is lower on the slide.

I am new to the optic game on handguns but have enjoyed playing with a Holosun 508T on a P-10 S OR. I only have a few thousand rounds through mine but have had no issues so far. It is mounted on the CZ RMR base with their co-witness rear and Dawson f/o front sight. I co-witnesses in the bottom of the window. The 508T has the green optic that I find easier to see.

I plan on putting a Holosun 508T V2 on a P-09 when I can get my hands on one. I will have CGW mill the slide and employ co-witness sights with a Dawson f/o front.

I have had the following on various pistols :
Holosun 507C
RMR 06
Fastfire 3 (2)
Vortex Venom(3)
I listed them in order of preference(mine).
The Holosun and RMR have been perfectly reliable for several thousand rounds, as have the Fastfires until just recently I had a failure. I had terrible luck with the Vortex, I had two immediate failures replaced under warranty so I sold the second replacement without unsealing the package.
The Holosun is my favorite by far, really liking the window size and circle/dot.

That sounds perfect to me!

I really don’t think you can go wrong with any of the Holosun offerings. I have 6 of them now on various pistols and 4 others on rifles. A few of them have 5k+ through them with no issue at all. The great price is just icing on the cake!

I would go with the Holosun 507C out of the choices you listed. When I had a handgun milled for an optic, I had to send my optic with the slide for them to mill it for a perfect fit. They said that each optic could have some minor differences in dimensions, so to send mine with the slide was best.

I watched a number of reviews of Holosun red dots on YouTube videos posted by Aaron as Sage Dynamics. I admit I cringed when he drops them from shoulder height on concrete and uses the optic on barricades to clear malfunctions. His personal evaluation influenced my decision to try the Holosun 508T V1 on a P-10 S. Several thousand rounds later, I am very satisfied with my purchase. I plan on putting another on a P-09 when I can purchase a new 508T and have the slide milled for it. I am happy with iron sights on the rest of my handguns.

Although I have been shooting since the invention of gunpowder, I had zero experience with optics on handguns. I recently began that journey hoping to maintain current levels of proficiency when my eyesight was no longer correctable without surgery. I learned a lot from the experiences of Aaron and the Sage Dynamics videos. They saved me time (and probably money) with tips and recommendations derived from actual experience.

Disclaimer - I have no relationship with Sage Dynamics or Aaron. Heck, I don't know his last name. But he is inquisitive, open-minded and practical when it comes to gear and techniques. I like that.
