Extended mag release
« on: June 11, 2020, 03:32:40 PM »
I’ve been looking for an extended mag release for my 97, so far without any luck. I read a post here where some people have gone the do-it-yourself route or that maybe CGW can custom make one. I’ll probably give them a call. My question is have any of you been able to find a supplier who has these on the shelf? Thanks

Yep, I run one on my 97.  Its nothing more than the SP01 mag release.  The SP01 uses the "8" shaped release, whereas the 97 uses the "0", so you need to grind off the extra material and fit it or just call CGW.

You can also run the Sp01 slide release on the 97.

Thanks chevelle, I’m hoping the Shadow 2 style will work as well, it looks like it may. I sent a question to CGW. Thanks again.

Concerning the 97 mag release, I asked CGW a month ago about the S2 paddle mag release.  This is their response:

The S2 mag release wouldn't work right if you modified it for the 97 but you can modify the frame to accept the double sided lever.

Thanks,

We’ve modified 97 frames for the S2 release.
The release needs some work too to work properly.

The SP01 slide release has different shaped head on the slide catch vs the 97. The stock 97 slide release has a bigger chamfer on it. Has this had any effects on the function of the 97?

The nub on the slide release is cut back to ensure the bullet nose clears.  If you load a mag and insert it into a field stripped frame and insert the slide stop you will see what I'm talking about.  If it isn't cut back enough the bullet will have feeding issues.  They didn't originally come this way and you would occasionally have feeding issues as a result (until it was fit/cut back).

Cheers,
Toby

Thanks Toby. I did as you mentioned last night. A slight amount of relief is necessary. Shouldn't take but a few minutes.

Here is a shot showing the different shapes. Definitely needs adjusted to use in the 97.
