DAO Sp-01 am I crazy
« on: June 12, 2020, 12:48:50 AM »
I have an sp-01 (my favorite pistol) with the defensive carry kit from Cajun gw.The DA is so good with the short reset kit, I've been considering getting a second race hammer and modding it to make it DAO.  Anyone tried it?  Am I crazy? Good idea/Bad idea?  I typically use it for tactical holster draw stroke practice on metal targets. The 3.8lb single action second shot is nice for trying to impress someone at the indoor range but I find it to be  a distraction for draw stroke training. I also use my ruger SP-101 revolver as DAO, and like it. (That's where I got the idea). I've read that you just need to grind the single action spur off of the hammer.  I would use a extra hammer so I could change it back.
Thoughts?

Why not. It's not permanent.

That's my first thought but I'm not sure I can trust that it would work right, I would hate to turn it into a full auto by accident or damage the gun.

Just load 2-3 rounds at a time, then if it is full auto it won't be running thru 17 rounds.  If it works start increasing the number of rounds until you reach full capacity.
If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.

Sounds like a really good plan, I’ll probably pick up another race hammer soon and see how it works.

Don't waste your money on a race hammer to modify it for DAO.  Just purchase a DAO hammer (if you can find one, I'd call CZ USA) or another stock hammer to modify.  You will grind off the hammer hooks and that is what your paying for with a race hammer.

Toby

Thanks, sounds like good advice. But I want to make sure I don’t  risk loosing the DA feel of the race hammer and have it feel like the stock setup.

The hammer has very little to do with the da feel.   Polishing the trigger bar, main spring strut, main spring weight, and installing a fitted disconnector effect the da feel.

You literally are going to grind off the point of a race hammer (and the reason you spend $ for them) to convert it to dao.

Cheers,
Toby

Yeah I’m not sure what components made the difference but I installed the defensive carry package which includes the race hammer. My friends SP01 is stock, his DA is not what I’m looking for, it’s longer , harder and less predictable break, could that be just the springs and not the pin pattern on the hammer?

The pin pattern is the same.

I'm confused, which gun doesn't have a good DA?  Like I said, polishing, springs, and disconnector.  If you have short fingers a reach reduction kit can help with trigger length of pull.

Cheers,
Toby

Just grind the hooks off of your old oem hammer and try it out.

If this is what it looks like you might be able to use one of these. I am tempted to pick one up to tinker with but i have no real interest in DAO. I agree with other forum members point that modifying a factory hammer would be the cheapest way to go.

Well, let see.  Hammer with no SA hammer hooks. How's that going to work? Pull the trigger in DA, the hammer falls, hits firing pin, cartridge fires, slide recoils, and hammer follows slide hitting the firing pin.  No that's not a good idea!

I hear ya Bossgobbler, when i first learned that in a DAO set up the hammer follows the slide forward it made me nervous, but apparently this is how the CZ factory DAO CZ75 functions.

Does the oem DAO retain the half cock hook?
