VZ2008 - Firing pin dropping out
« on: June 20, 2020, 12:59:29 PM »
My VZ2008 began failing to fire today, and after dissembling I found the firing pin sitting in the receiver. I removed the extractor, installed the firing pin, checked for function, and got one round off before the same thing happened again.

I've also noticed damage to the breech block, I think caused by impact from the striker judging by the damage. Any ideas on what's causing this weirdness?

The extractor retains the firing pin.  Did you try replacing both the firing pin and extractor with a new part?
One or the other?

From the looks of your firing pin pic, the forward edge of the retaining slot looks to be beveled/angeled forward rather than straight perpendicular, which could allow it to move past the extractor -- I would think that in doing so the extractor would get out of alignment with the rest of the bolt and force bolt in opposite direction (would also make sense to replace extractor spring and might as well do the retaining piece as well).  So on rear of bolt (assuming that's what you're referencing by "breech block," that's probably from impacting your recoil spring retaining rod -- the part attached to the top cover -- as the bolt was forced down and to the left.   Check top cover/spring guides for damage.

Are you sure you're not having out of battery, chamber over-pressure, or other issues?  Or at least something like that didn't cause in the first place?

And I'm frankly at a loss for what's going on with your striker's front face.

On bolt disassembly and cleaning if helpful:

Appreciate the response. This malfunction started yesterday, so no chance to swap anything out yet.

A few hundred rounds through it prior to these issues, and no modifications or changes to ammo that might account for what I'm seeing.

You're right about the wear on the firing pin - I hadn't noticed that. It looks like it might be smarter to order an entire bolt from bonesteel (as opposed to a pin/extractor separately, then file off burr on current bolt). I'll order today and give it a go. Thanks!
