Scratch on new SP01 barrel
« on: July 20, 2020, 03:38:47 PM »
Howdy all. So today I picked up my new SP01 Tactical and when I got it home I noticed a 1” scratch on the barrel. Is it something to worry about? I get that they have some wear because they fire it before it leaves the factory but this is long scratch. It actually is about an inch long and it you look closer it extends a little longer but it’s not as deep.

would not be an issue for me! the slide is going to hide it anyway and the barrel will wear in some on it's own as it cycles.

Ditto but if it bothers you give the dealer a shout and see if they can get a replacement for you.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Ya I emailed cz and they said that it’s not normal and to send it in. They said it was too deep and it’s prob a burr in the bushing. Sucks. It’s brand new but it is what it is.

rplora!   might want to check your barrel bushing for a burr at that location!

I did check for a burr. I didn’t find anything rough. I lined the scratch up and on the bushing there is a mark right where the scratch on the barrel is but it’s not rough or anything. Kinda weird. Either way it’s going back to CZ. Sucks because it’s brand new and I just got it. Kinda bummed about that. I wish they would have seen that before shipping it out.

If  bushing is good to go, then it is most likely a non issue if barrel also locks up tightly.  That coating is from carburization and will wear off with use.

I’m torn. Should I send it back and wait the 4-6 weeks? Should I ask them to send me a new barrel, I was planning on replacing the barrel bushing with a Cajun Gun works bushing either way. Kinda of a bummer considering I bought this brand new direct from CZ. Along with a few others from them.

If it is not going to be visible with the pistol assembled and it is not going to hurt the accuracy i would shoot it. You can cold blue the scratch to darken it up if you wish to make it less visible but the black CZ barrel coating wears rather quickly. There is going to be wear all over the barrel in no time if you are shooting it. Just pretend that the scratch makes the psitol faster, it dose resemble a racing stripe.  8)
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Totally. I’ll say it’s my racing gun.  Maybe I’ll get a matching scratch on the other side.

Maybe you could just polish the entire barrel?

I normally would say something to the effect that this is a tool and I don't care about scratches but this is on the barrel and it routinely has ~35000 psi pushing a projectile ~1100 fps through it.

Can you comment on how deep the scratch is in the barrel?  Can you feel it with your fingernail?  Is it deep (think like a vee carved into the barrel) or is it just a superficial blemish that took off the coating?  If it is deep, you may want to consider sending it in as it may fatigue over time into a crack.  How sharp the scratch is actually could matter.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
Toby

I can feel it with my finger nail. It’s relatively deep, it definitely is cut past the coating. I’ve never fired it. I totally get that it’s a tool and it’s going to get worn. I have no issue with that, I’m looking forward to that but it’s brand new. And that scratch is not normal according to CZ. I’m sending it back tomorrow to get inspected and I’ll prob be getting a new barrel out of it and they are going to inspect the bushing. From what I can tell the bushing has no burr but there is a mark on it where the barrel did rub. Either way, I’m bummed it has to go back but as long as it’s getting fixed it’s cool. I also got my p-01 that I just picked up as well to keep me entertained.
