Pretty cool news; legislation in the Czech Republic proposes carry of arms for self defense and defense of others.

Thanks for the link. Sounds like they need to get it passed to keep the EU directives in check.

Czechs have more CCW permits than Americans per capita, no problems of any kind.
Here in EU you cant't have CCW permit because people fear the government. There are many, many EU directives in which it clearly stands:
-firearms are bad
-reduce the share of firearms owners in population
-legal and illegal firearms are almost the same, they are bad, reduce them
-"eradicate the culture of armaments" - whatever this is

interesting, czech republic, switzerland and finland are at # 8, 10, 14 postions respectively in global piece index. czechs and swiss have the most liberal laws in europe and finns have the most firearms per capita.

mark my words: EU will end up like USSR.

A friend of mine who lives in Germany told me about their rules. You can buy pistol after throughout background check and only if you have club membership. Then you can use it for recreational or sport shooting only. Period. You can't use it for self defense. If you shoot intruder who attacked you with knife - you will go to jail for the murder. But you can kill intruder using "equal force" - also knife. LOL :)  At the same time he told me about his neighbor who was drunk and shooting his pistol to the sky. Police didn't arrest him and didn't confiscate his weapon, because nobody was hurt. He just paid fine of 1000 euro or so. Crazy laws !!!

I can confirm this communist laws for Croatia (or Croatistan) also.

You got to be registered sport shoter or hunter to own a pistol. Sport shooters must be club members and shoot competitions, hunters can use only for self defence from wounded animal or to shoot animal in head/neck if it is mortally wounded. When you go to range/hunting pistol have to be locked in case separately from ammo.

You can use pistol for self defense (even one illegaly owned) but only in someone attacks you with a firearm. If you shoot someone who attacked you with knife - you go to jail.

You can own a pistol for self defense only for use in your house and nowhere else.

You can get CCW only if you are police/police informer/secret service. If you somehow get a CCW permit (it is more likely to win a lottery) you must use only FMJ bullets and it is forbidden to carry one in the chamber (for police also)

When you ask for a firearms license for the first time it is like small adventure you go through.

First you go to police.
Then they ask you what type of license you want (sport/hunting/self defense).
You must prove you need one.

Than you go to your personal doctor to check if you have any illness history.
Than you go to specialist doctor, they check your body functions - sugar level, pressure, vision, reactions, etc...
After that you go to psychologist, you write tests to see if you are crazy.
If you pass the tests you go to psychiatrist, he talks to you why you want a firearms license etc...
Your personal doctor is responsible if something change (from time you get first permit until forever) in your health status to inform a police about that immediately.

Than you go to police after that, again. Background check can last for month or two. Every time you buy new firearm background check is must, and it lasts for month or two every single time.

10rd magazine for rifle and 20rd mag for pistol are mandatory, if you own higher capacity mags, police take your firearms for melting.
if you own even a 1 (ONE) bullet in a caliber you don't own a firearm, they take all your guns.
If you operate firearms intoxicated, do public disorder,  got in a bar fight, any misdemeanor with hassle and/or fight..they take everything from you
Police can check on you anytime they want and see if you care for firearms as legally assumed (in metal safe, empty, separate from the ammunition).
reloading was also banned until a few years ago.

EDIT: and I forgot. Average month salary is $950, 9mm bullet ~$0.30 (before COVID-19), Shadow 2 costs $1400. :)

This is a good recap of what it takes to get a firearms license in the Czech Republic plus about $250 USD in fees. Back in 2015-2016 when there was a surge in licensing demand, one had to schedule indoors range time well in advance as there many classes going on. Btw...Trigger Service is a very nice indoor range near downtown Brno with a cool selection of firearms to rent.

Czech Republic conducts reasonable policy in many areas. Like Finnland. It's a genetic sense of independence, I guess.

It' s a different story. You can be charged in DE when you shot somebody in self defence against knife attack.
Notwehr ist die Verteidigung, die erforderlich ist, um einen gegenwärtigen rechtswidrigen Angriff von sich oder einem anderen abzuwenden.

It depends on multiple circumstances, but it is possible. In my view it's even likely.

Reading your answer in German, I suppose you are from Germany as well.

Sorry, but this sentence is not very clear to me.
Do you relate that to a presumed conviction after using a firearm in a knife attack or do you think that the use of a firearm would probably be justified?
Of course, if a firearm is used in this case, there will be an official investigation. But if I can prove that the attacker attacked me with the knife drawn, I calmly look forward to every trial, even if I should have killed the attacker while repelling the attack with a firearm.
A hunting friend who once tried such a case as a lawyer gave me enough sample judgments some time ago which could be linked here.
I have now made it clear that the statement made here about the German legal system regarding self-defense was and is wrong.
I don't shy away from further discussion, but among Germans an American CZ forum is not the right place for this.
So this is my last post on this subject here.
I can't speak on behalf of Americans, but I personally think you should feel free to discuss openly on this forum. I have found it to be very mellow/mild for politically sensitive issues. As a 2nd Generation American from Germany I find interest in the differences between our countries. We should learn about other legal systems and countries laws in regards to something very unique in our country (Private Gun Ownership). Of course, if you feel uncomfortable discussing or feel translation to English could be sacrificed for ultimate meaning/understanding, I understand. Tschüs!

Sorry to dig up an old topic folks but I was really glad I found this thread here. Nice to know that our affairs have an attention outside... I am Czech and we really are fighting against the gun grabbers here just like you are :)

The only difference here is that the gun grabbers are the EU and its largest member states :( which is generally a reason for the 2A-like legislation being discussed at the moment...

To be more specific, there were two different proposals. The first one, more detailed did not pass as it was to explicit for some anti-gun politicians who were afraid of the reaction of the EU etc. but the second one, although very brief and general, have a fair chance to pass. :)

And if anybody is interested in more details on how it works up here, I can offer you a video from my channel... you will find out what we can own here, what we can carry (pretty much anything :D ) etc.
