Why the change from 15 to 16 rounds
« on: August 03, 2020, 02:55:09 PM »
We all know the CZ75  originally  came out with 15 round mags. Then the AWB of 1994 came out and for a while CZ was importing 10 round mags. Later on came the 16 round mags in 1997, according to the miscellaneous  section of the CZ 75 history subforum here. Why did CZ change up the follower- maybe to give their 75 series pistols have more of a slight edge in the marketplace?

Isn't capacity the big selling point for wonder 9's. 16 beats out 15 there fore it's got to be better.

its like anything else you buy as a consumer.

$$$ (profit) drives alot of decisions when it comes to consumer goods.  And saying (marketing) your gun can carry X many (more) bullets than your competitor maybe a bigger draw for those new to guns.

also, there may have been technological changes/improvements over time that would allow things to improve.  Such as squeaking out 1 more MPG out of a car.   IIRC, some of the subarus put in active shutters in the front grill to close at x speed.  It suppose to give you 1? more MPG.

CZ may have redesigned the follower and/or spring to make that possible.  who knows if it was on the "to do list" for years, but to me, it doesnt matter.

Also, there will always be someone where 1000 round magazine or a nuclear bomb wont be enough.

This exactly. The Beretta 92 was 15 rnds too but now the M9A3 is 17 rnds and the mags fit perfectly in the 92's. Simply because they could so they did.

It does make me chuckle that CZ has always found a way to cram one or two more rounds into their full size 75 series mags. Meanwhile for the longest time, the Sig P226 and Beretta 92/M9 somehow kept their default mag capacity at 15 rounds. Heck, Mecgar probably beat both makers to the punch with their 226 and 92 18 round flush fitting mags.

The full size 75 mags are well suited for 16 rounds and usually load easily. One thing to note about capacity is the original P-07 9mm mags were 16 rounds and it was nearly impossible to get that 16th round into some of them as the spring was crushed into itself when loaded fully. They dropped a round on the gen 2 guns and that made loading easier and increased mag spring life. CZ won't readily admit the mistake on the early mags and they use a different"excuse" but that's the way I read it.
