long-term storage of CZ75b in high humidity environment
« on: August 05, 2020, 07:15:01 PM »
I live in a tropical area where the air humidity can be 80%, sometimes it rains for weeks. I used to live in Arizona, where this was not a problem. But now, I'm wondering how I can protect my CZ75b from such a harsh environment? I haven't found any safes that are air-tight. Desiccants are useful but they won't last long and have to be reset (by putting in the oven for example). Sometimes I'm gone for months at a time, so I need something truly long-term.

What is the best solution? I was thinking maybe just placing the gun in plastic Tupperware that is sealed?

Vacuum Seal
Heat Seal

Make sure you clean and lube real good - no fingerprints

But do some research - I live in low humidity at the moment - but want to learn also if/when I can finally move back to Texas.

I've lived in central VA for 35 years now.  I just keep a coat of 3n1 oil (for many years) or Mobil 1 oil (the last 10 or 12 years) on the surfaces and so far, no rust.

My guns were stored in the attic (hot/humid all summer, cold/humid in the winter) for decades.  I remember pulling some of the older rifles out the soft cases (yeah, like you put your shotgun in when you go hunting) that had been oiled up and stored away 8 years before.  No rust on any of them.  These were parkerized rifles (03's, M1917s) but even the sporterized M1917s that were blued were not rusted.

How humid in the winter?  I've gone out to the garage and found moisture condensed on the cars, tool boxes, etc. after a temperature change.  A time or two I thought I'd had a roof leak till I got to checking and found the surfaces looked/felt like fog on a windshield that needed to be defrosted.

As they say, your mileage will vary, but a thorough cleaning and wipe down afterwards with an oily rag/cloth does wonders when done right.  And, after you wipe it down, you don't touch any metal surfaces while putting it in the storage location.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I'm currently in Northern Illinois and have my safe in a basement which is dry but I am sure is higher in humidity than in other parts of the house.  I currently have three of the "EvaDry" dehumidifiers hung in the safe which require recharging by plugging them in every couple of weeks.  I've thought about buying one of the electrical bars that are mounted in the corner of the safe, but haven't yet as I didn't want to deal with drilling the safe to allow for the cord.   We are considering getting out of this godforsaken state in the next year moving to the Mid-South and I will then have to come up with a more permanent solution such as the electrical unit with a backup of the portable ones for temporary power outages.  That will probably also involve getting a larger safe!  I'll be interested in seeing what others do for other ideas and thanks for posting!

I had to store most of my firearms for almost a year during a move. Bought a vacuum sealer and heavy gauge rolls of sealer bags. Sprayed firearms with food grade silicone spray/lubricant. Used silicone food grade because I figured it wouldn't degrade the plastic vacuum bags. Worked perfectly even after long term(11 month) storage in a non climate controlled high humidity environment. No rust whatsoever. I did have to double bag a few due to sharp corners/pieces on some guns.  it gave me a perfect excuse to get a vacuum sealer for jerky, marinading  meat, ammo storage. etc etc.

When I moved to the Texas Hill Country from West Texas, I got a small electric rod heater for the safe.  I keep the firearms in there, maybe 10 or 15 degrees warmer than the surrounding air, so no chance for condensation.  In the house, the humidity is low but the temperature way cold compared to ambient, so I try to warm the bedside firearms up in a large baggie before opening them up to near 100% humidity to prevent condensation.   I think Midway had the safe heaters.  No problems after a year in this jungle climate.  It's raining as I type.

I have seen evidence of pitting in the barrels due to me not cleaning the bores after every range trip and leaving the combustion products and moisture in the barrel, desert or humid location.
