Dove Tail Red Dot mounting plate for CZ P 07
« on: August 28, 2020, 06:38:07 PM »
I am considering mounting a Burris Fast Fire ll red dot on my P 07. Has anyone had experience using a mounting plate that  replaces the rear sight rather that milling the slide?

Springer Precision is what I have used, same as one for 75B.  I’ve had one on a P-09 for six years, one on a 97B for four years, and one on a 75B that has also been on a P-07 for four or five years, all with Burris FF3 3 moa red dots.   These are used for bullseye matches and 100-200 yard bench rest sessions.

mine isn't on a CZ, but I have a Holosun on one of the mounts from EGW.

Thanks guys. I assume you are pleased with the quality of setup? Any tips on the install? I think I will give it a try.

The Springer went in a little tighter than the EGWs, but that could have just been the specific guns cut. The Springer has a set screw at the front of the plate and a YouTube installer claimed he tilted the mount up too much. He had a hard time sighting the RDS. He backed the screw off and leveled the plate— all good. I never torqued it down that much.

Use lock tight. On my first one I wanted to test things out on the RDS before setting it. It loosened up in about 10 rnds.

I hear a lot of good said about the Springer, so I think the OP will be happy.

My EGW plate was tight going in, so I doubt it would ever move even without the set-screw.

The Springer has 2 set screws. #1 sets in the dovetail slot (typical),. #2 is towards the front of the mounting plate and sets against the slide with a nylon tipped screw. This is to eliminate flex? I guess.

The Springer mounts have two set screws in the dovetail and then one on the base at the front and one in the rear.

The mount MUST fit tight in the dovetail before tightening the dovetail set screws!!!  Do not rely on the dovetail set screws.  I have used 0.005 brass shim stock to tighten the fit if the mount is not tight in the dovetail.  It MUST be tight enough that it takes a soft hammer to tap it in place.  Mine are very tight.  Now.  The tiny front and rear set screws can be snugged down but do not overtighten the front one and make a bow in the base.  The base must be flat and parallel to the top of the slide or you won't get the sight zeroed.

If the dovetail fit is good and tight, and the dovetail set screws tightened after applying blue loctite, the mount is very reliable.  I only had to re-zero my P-09 once or twice in over 6 years of use, and I think that was because I moved the sight to a P-10 gun before I got a slide cut.

The key is to use shim stock if and when needed.  There is some variation in the dimensions of the dovetails on the guns.

Thanks for the comments. I will be sure the dovetail is tight. My plan is to level the gun in my vice and level the mount place to that by adjusting the plate screws if necessary. Should do it.

No.  Do not rely on the screws for leveling.  They are tiny and I believe even have a nylon insert.  You MUST rely ONLY on the dovetail fit.  Those little fore and aft screws are of minimal value in my opinion on a centerfire pistol.

Sorry if that sounded a little harsh, I was in a hurry this morning.

When you get the mount, you will see how tiny the little set screws are, fore and aft.  The mount itself is quite rigid, so you will get to see for yourself how it fits.  If the mount itself isn't very tight in the dovetail, it will move slightly after a few hundred rounds and the zero will shift.  I have had that happen is why I was so adamant about getting a tight dovetail fit, even if you have to use some shim stock.  I think I have used shim stock, either 5 mil or 10 mil on about 1/2 of the dovetail mounts I have.   I have also had to file the bottom of the mount some to get the mount installed.

Having the zero shift suddenly on you will take all the fun out of having a red dot on the pistol.  I don't want anyone to have that experience.  You will love the red dot after you get used to it.

You can always have the slide milled later if you want a little lower mounted sight.  For bullseye, the dovetail mount works fine.  For run and gun, I like the milled slide, but can live with the dovetail if I have to.

No problem, thanks. I have some .005 shim material and do not mind being a bit creative. I have used red dots on pistols but they were mos versions and I have gone back to steel sights on pistols. Honestly, I had the Burris Fastfire sitting on top of the safe and decided to use it. The P07 seems like a good candidate. I will use it for pistol challenge and action pistol primarily with steel targets 10 yds. If all is good, I may keep it setup that way or I may have it milled or get something MOS. ???

Joe L you were correct. The dovetail was not as tight as I thought it should be so I added .005 shim, tapped the plate in, leveled the slide. I then leveled  the plate, removed screws and added blue lock tight leveled and mounted the Burris Fastfire. I will go to my club in a day or two to zero. Thanks for the tip.
