Hello,

I'm wondering if slide is black nitrided underneath the polycoating?

Thanks

unless things have changed recently, the Shadow 2 pistols were the only CZ factory pistols with Nitride under the Polycoat. All of the other pistols have Polycoat over a Phosphate finish.

(CZ Custom does have "poly over nitride" options)

Thank you.

Another random question: have you seen anyone black nitride bath over the phosphate finish?

my understanding is you need bare metal for the nitriding process to work, so the phosphate finish has to be removed first.

I assume that media blasting will take care of the Phosphate coating?

that should get you down to bare steel fairly quickly

My understanding of surface treatments is the steel part is immersed in a salt bath (whether Nitride, Phosphate, or other salts) and the ions are electrochemically bonded to the iron making it non-reactive. Steel is porous when seen on a microscopic level, which is why rust pits form when oxygen ions bond with deeper layers of iron. To remove the coating, you would need to remove all the bonded iron layers to bare steel and lose the surface finish.
