Small game and .22

I scrolled a few pages, didn't see mention of squirrel!
From a 452 UL, which ammo would you prefer to use?

I use rws subsonic up. Very accurate, quite and hits them real hard. Good luck hunting.

For rabbit and squirrel I like CCI's Small Game Bullet loading or Winchester's 40gr Power point HP. All of my 22 rifles and pistols shoot these loads with good accuracy and the bullets tend to cleanly take a rabbit or squirrel.  CCI's MiniMag HP ammo does a good job too, it's my fall back when I can't get the other two.

I like the CCI quiets.  Accurate enough at 50 or so yards for head shots and hits hard enough to make a clean kill every time.

With a .22 it's a good idea to buy several boxes of ammo from different makes in different bullet types and then test them to see what is reliable and accurate in your rifle.  Not all ammo shoots the same in every rifle.

My Win. M52B really does well with Remington Thunderbolts.  My 10/22 does really well with Remington Golden Bullets.  My SIG 522 doesn't seem to care whether I shoot Winchester or Remington ammo in it, just hits a different POI vs. POA with different brands.  My dad's old Savage M29 did really well with Winchester Wildcats (which where garbage in my M52B).

My dad and grandpa used .22 shorts for squirrels, rabbits and even grouse for decades.  Head shots work.
I stopped carrying the SIG 556R.  SIG changed models and couple/three times and stopped supporting it with parts.  So, I stopped supporting SIG.  Back to the tried/true AR15 Carbine.

went from using cci segmented hp quiets to remington golden bullet in my mk4 when grouse hunting. the cci's dont cycle and make followup shots a pain

not a problem with my 457 and they hit hard enough to stop them

I definitely do not disagree with you, however I think ammo does seem to perform more consistently in bolt guns which is also a consideration.  Semi-auto guns I like to run hotter stuff. Like CCI, just seems more reliable.

One of the Appleseeds i instructed at years ago was attended by a mother and two children.  A son in his middle teens and a daughter in elementary school.  The mother had the family's 10/22, the young daughter had a borrowed 10/22 and the son had an old Remington bolt action .22.  One of the times I walked by the tarps they were lying on for prone stages I noticed the son picking up the duds from the mom and daughters 10/22's.  I asked him what he was doing with those duds and he told me he was shooting them.  I asked if he was having any duds and he told me he had not.  Every single 10/22 failure to fire round went bang in his old Remington bolt action.

I don't remember the brand of ammo they were using.
