CZ 457 "Royal" version.
« on: November 22, 2020, 05:00:59 PM »
The Royal 457 22LR is very appealing to me, but I cancelled a purchase of one because of CZ putting the "Royal' designation in big block letters on the sides of the stock.  It's beyond my ability to comprehend why they would screw up any stock with block lettering, particularly one they bill as having extra fancy wood.  Hopefully they will see the error of their ways and remove that blight, thus offering this rifle with a clean classic look.  If and only then - I will be all over it!

They did the same on the “Premium” model I bought recently.  I think it’s a shame that it’s there, but I don’t find it as objectionable as I feared.

If the “Royal” shoots as well as the “American” I recently bought, and I am sure it does, the lettering on the wood wouldn’t really bother me.  Just MHO....   It is an awesome rimfire that shoots way better than I am capable of and has a real quality feel to it.

I think there may be cultural issues involved, when it comes to certain aesthetics.  I presume they market the gun internationally and its quite possible that the style in question has appeal to other peoples.

Probably shoudn't be a deal breaker, but it's at least mildly offensive to these 88 year old peepers. Clearly, the "signature" is a minor item, a strictly personal thing whereas the overall quality and execution and shootability of the CZ rimfires is consistantly outstanding.  I love CZ's, but I'll have to cogitate a bit on this one, but I have time on my side....?

No.... I completely understand your perspective.  I am by far not a young guy, being just a few weeks shy of the double-nickel.  My gun safe is full of walnut & steel, M1 Garands, M1a, Springfield rifle and  South American Mausers.  I get it & appreciate your perspective.

My point was that my new CZ American is such an amazing shooter that I can overlook some visual aspects that aren't quite 'old school', especially considering that the CZ is steel/walnut and with an amazing trigger, a classic style stock and a Mauser style bolt action in miniature.  Can't see some of the 'offensive' stuff from behind the scope while putting them all in one hole, right where you wanted them ;)!

My shop just got a 457 American 22LR in stock.  i'm going to check it out tomorrow.  The near 25" barrel is a bit long for my taste, but not a deal breaker by any means.

As a member of the over 60 crowd, "Traditional" doesn't sell.  The manufacturers are appealing to a different generation

The 457 line is awesome. I've got a couple and I think are a huge improvement from the 455 line. If you don't like the barrel, all 457 barrels are interchangeable as long as there is enough space in the barrel channel. Also, it makes buying 2 extra barrel sets for a single action that can shoot .22LR, 22 WMR and 17HMR pretty sweet!

Ok, I checked on the American and was suitably impressed.  Bought it, of course.  Weather up here is not conducive to rushing out and pop some caps, as we have about 20" of snow on the ground and although it's a plus 17 at the moment It'll drop to below zero and then some quickly.  Saving grace is that I have an indoor heated & vented private range I can access whenever I want, so I'll get over there and have some fun soon,  I hope.  Just got my hand/wrist out of a cast, so I'll get an idea how it shoots in a couple weeks. Not sure if if this piece will live it's life with a 24.8" bbl or a stubby.............to be determined.

You all have a great Thanksgiving

I had a feeling you would come home with it ;).  Mine has a beautiful stock and an excellent trigger out of the box.  Can’t wait to read your range report!!

You'll get a report when I to the point when I've got at least a hand and a half to work with.  Checked the trigger on the 457 and it's 3# with the slightest of creep.  It'll be fine when I adjust it.  My 455 American, of course, does't have the adjustable trigger, butI  have worked on it, decided 1 1/2# was a tad light, settled on 2# and as crisp and clean as any trigger I've ever seen.  It's a great shooter and if I can duplicate it's performance with new 457 platorm I'll be a happy camper.

After debating the barrel length desireability for my new 457 American for approximatly 60 seconds I made my move.  Pulled the barrel off and my buddy (a gunsmith) lopped it off t0 18" and recropwned it.  I adusted the trigger to a very clean 2.25#.  Today, at my indoor range, which is all I have available this time of the year It shot great, one slight ragged hole.  Anxious for soring when I can really stretch it out.  I liked the gun before, but with the 18"barrel I absolutely love it.
