VZ 2008 jamming, pierced primers
« on: June 12, 2021, 07:32:59 PM »
I posted last June about a firing pin issue I was having with my VZ 2008. Thanks to the advice on this forum, I ended up replacing the bolt and firing pin, and the gun ran fine for a hundred rounds or so, and in the safe it went.

This summer I'm running into jams every 2-3 rounds, as well as pierced primers. Neither issue was happening prior to replacing the bolt. Usually a round is loaded with half an inch remaining before it's fully in battery. I can get it running again by grabbing the charging handle and mortoring the rifle against the ground. 2-3 rounds, repeat.

I'm not able to see any obvious damage or extreme wear after disassembly. Pictures of jam and primers here: https://imgur.com/a/76xyQms

Since this might be related to what I was dealing with last year, here are pictures of the bolt damage prior to replacement: https://imgur.com/a/4YWj1Lm

Any guesses on where to start troubleshooting?

Get your headspace checked.

First photo here, your bolt carrier should be nearly abutting the piston channel/rear sight tower: https://imgur.com/a/76xyQms

You can remove the bolt from the carrier and push carrier into battery to see where it should be sitting.

If you have a round in the chamber in these photos, it's possible that a thorough cleaning of your chamber and then inspecting for burrs, etc, and removing them might resolve.

But if it doesn't I wouldn't fire the gun until after a qualified and competent gunsmith has inspected, diagnosed, and fixed whatever issue exists...  Vz2008s use less common SAAMI spec 7.62x39 chambers AFAIK, not CIP, so make sure you/gunsmith use the right gauges.

Thanks - I'll get it to a gunsmith.

Just fyi -- headspace on these is adjusted via the locking blocks.  The interface of the bolt carrier, bolt, and locking block all affect headspace.

Another thing I forgot to mention was to ensure that your extractor is going over your round -- if there was one in the chamber.  Your out of battery in that pic is probably roughly equivalent to that.
