Removing front sight on 97B

Ok, got brave and got a set of Trijicon sights for the 97B.  No problem with pushing the rear sight out (required some assistance from a hammer when the pusher would not suffice), but CGW sent me a rear sight
with what I take is the world's smallest allen wrench, which is no good for the front sight, because it is pinned,
near as I can tell.
This means I have to find a punch the size of the pin?? Can you re-use the pin ok?

   It should be possible to tap out the Front Sight Pin with a punch that is the right size or a bit smaller. While it is generally advised that the pin be replaced, if it dose not take allot of damage coming out you should be able to reuse it. The factory CZ 97 front sight dose not have a set screw, the wrench must be for the replacement sight.

Those Front sight pins have been easy to tap out in my experience. Anything the right size should suffice if you do not have the correct sized punch.

thanks- I am sure I have an old drill I can use (the non sharp end) for a punch.  Working on pistols has
always been a terror for me, but maybe I am progressing.

1/16 punch will remove the front sight though you may bend the punch the first time you remove the pin, and you can reuse the pin for your new sight . You will probably have to drill the new sight which can be a challange the first time.

Lock-n-load makes a good point about drilling the notch for the Front Sight Roll Pin. Some sights do not come with the notch. If you wish to avoid drilling the notch after the sight is installed, you can install the sight and mark it through the hole on both sides and then remove it and make the notch with a file.

Roscoe2212, just in case you are not aware, the bottom of a new front sight will likely require fitting before installation.

thanks for the good words.  I found out that even though I paid CZ Custom $$$ for Trijicon sights, they did not include a new pin-"to keep costs down"  a new pin is $4-seems unduly stingy IMHO

   Not that this justifies the cost of the pin, but the Front Sight Pin also retains the Barrel Bushing in a CZ 75 variant. This is part of why it is advised that you replace them. If you are able to reuse the pin, keep an eye on the bushing for any movement. In the worst case, you can shoot it right off of the slide and in some cases loose the bushing entirely.


Correction: As tdogg pointed out below, the CZ 97 is unique among the CZ 75 variants as it pertains to the Barrel Bushing design and retention.

This is a good thing in this case. Less to worry about if reusing the Front Sight Pin.

The front sight pin doesn't hold the 97b barrel bushing.  The bushing is threaded onto the slide and the recoil spring plug prevents it from spinning off.

I agree that you should replace the roll pin and it should come with the replacement front sight.   I actually like to have a spare as you can easily booger it during install.
