CGW trigger pre-travel screw de-cocker
« on: September 05, 2021, 10:33:09 PM »
Are you really gaining very much by using a pre-travel set screw in an CGW old style 85 trigger for a de-cocker pistol?

Most folks are going to carry the pistol in the default de-cock mode or basically allowing the hammer to de-cock to the safety notch. However for the trigger to reset in DA mode the hammer needs to come fully forward and allow the trigger to come past the normal default setting. Not normally a problem with the first shot DA and subsequent shots SA.

Therefore the pre-travel screw needs to be set for the hammer all the way down so that in the event you have a misfire you can double strike the cartridge with the hammer fully lowered and the trigger allowed to reset in DA mode. But when you carry with the default de-cock setting you're basically losing any advantage of the pre-travel screw even with the reach reduction disconnector. Am I missing something?

With the DA Pre travel set screw installed and the pistol Decocked (Hammer at the half cock notch), the at rest Trigger position will be shorter than without it. The decocked DA Trigger pull will start later but the Trigger will still be eraser to reach.

To be clear, the at rest DA trigger position is the same with the Hammer at half cock and the fully down position.

From my perspective, whether or not there is something to gain is dependent on the shooters ability to comfortably reach the Trigger in DA or the other potential benefits of a reduced DA pull length.

Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Thanks Tok and you are correct that the at rest position will be the same either way, but that the trigger pull will begin later in the de-cock position. It's unfortunate that you can't take full advantage of the reduced trigger reach in the de-cock position where the actual engagement begins. The actual gain from using the pre-travel screw when setting in the fully forward position and then de-cocking to the half-cock position seems small to me but may be huge to others with short fingers where every little bit helps.
