scoping a 452 Varmint
« on: February 23, 2002, 06:15:39 PM »
what do you boys use to scope your 452 Varmint?  I just bought one of the sweet rifles and am looking for a quality scope without breaking the bank (under 100 if possible)
a couple folks have recommended the Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50mm and some others the Tasco Varmint.  I saw a Bushnell Trophy on sale at Natchez 4.5-15 for $120, anyone have any experience with these?
Thanks

BKL 257 rings and a Simmons 6.5-20X44mm 44Mag AO scope. SWFA.com has the Simmons you mentioned and the one I mentioned and Brownell's has the BKL rings.

Simmons Whitetail between 80.00 and 100.00 ,  6.5 x20x50 use  see threw rings ,not to see threw but to get you high enough to mount this huge scope ,great on low recoil guns. Seach the net there are lots of them out there.

The use of HIGH CZ-rings are hard to beat, in my book nothing beats STEEL. Their mounts are very well made, not clean looking but can take a lot of abuse.

I use a Leupold Varix II 3x9x40mm for many of my rifles.

I really like their optics & reliability for the money spent. I think that they are an excellent scope for the money & you can't beat the warranty. I just got one back from Leupold that I sent in to have "Warranty Inspected" Total turn around...7 days. They gave me updated print outs on my scope specifically & they went through it "internally & externally and put it back together in an as new condition".  Pretty good, considering it was USED & I paid $75 for it.

Oh yeah....most of mine in the above configuation, I have bought used for $75-$85....same warranty as new! Last one I bought was just as described but with a parralax adj....paid $75+tax. (new they are around $200; I think that they are the best bargain around!

Where do I get them? From a local gun store that pulls them off their trade in's & sells them separately.

If buying new, it sure seems like Simmons is putting out some decent scopes near that price range. I have a Simmons 44 mag that has done very well by me. Great warranties too!

Tasco also has a decent ones in that range if you stay with the World Class & above. They aren't as good as they used to be about their warranties though. They charge you $12 inspection fee every time!  They then decide from there...

As for what i use for rigs...I use some Lynx rings I bought in Canada that are made in Australia.

Just a couple pennies worth & that is about it.

These are now discontinued they were made by Tetra who supplied Redfield if I'm not mistaking. To bad they were hard to beat. Saw your pictures: nice stuff.

Too bad on the rings. I loved them!

Thanks on the compliments. I would love to see any one elses odd ball stuff as well.

Hi,
I've got a BSA Platinum target scope on my Sav/Anschutz .22.  I also use the Millet angle locks.  I like them.  I'm no expert.  But, I hit what I aim at.  Get a set of the NRA silhouettes, they're a blast.  I got mine from Champion Shooters Supply in Colorado.  The "ping" is very satisfying, especially over 100 yards.
Turkish: "What's that for?"
Tommy: "Protection."
Turkish: "Protection from what, ze Germans?"

I agree, all my guns use them...I like that they are also quick detaches. Actually, that is all I have & I don't have any newer ones. I bought a few extra pairs one year when visiting in Canada as I could never find them here. They only use the 1" tubes. Sadly, I never did get any for 30mm tubes.

I have two Bushnell Sportsman scopes that I like real well for the money. I bought a 3-9x32 from Cabela's for $39.95 and 3-9x40 with a 3-2-1 low light reticle from WalMart for $59.95. Cabela's also has it for the same price. I like the 3-2-1 reticle a little better.
