What caused this?
« on: January 11, 2022, 05:07:43 PM »
Shooting the bren today. Ran 180 rounds through it with no issues. When I was policing the range I found this. Anyone have any ideas what caused it. Gun never malfunctioned while shooting and bolt locked back every time on empty magazine. The casing is bent and torn.
I’ll add picture when I figure out how to.

Figured how to post the picture finally.

Are you using an aftermarket handguard, by chance, torqued to less than 60 in.lbs.?

No, factory handguard. It ran flawlessly, no jams or stoppages.

Bad ammo then? What were you shooting? Out of battery ignition ?

That's not your case, or at least isn't in the shape its in due to its firing process. A fired case can't fail that way contained in a chamber. An out of battery discharge wouldn't leave any inward impression in the case. Explaining away the impression as being secondary to whatever event tore the case, it is still unlikely that this was caused by the ignition of its propellant because the failure of the case is localized in a roughly circular pattern. Ignition outside of a chamber would look more like a burst balloon, with only the thicker area around the base and any portion supported by a chamber retaining anything resembling its manufactured shape.

That case looks like its been shot with a low velocity projectile.

What is the brand, origin and type of ammo? Age and circumstances of storage?

Can you post a pic of the head stamp?

I’m not familiar with Red Star Standard ammo - do you mean Red Army Standard (imported by Century)?

I think RAS ammo in 7.62x39 is coming out of Bosnia, at least part of it is. I’ve been hearing some bad things (like this) about Bosnian ammo in general. A lot of Bosnian ammo is coming out of the woodwork these days to pick up the slack from the Russia ban.

If you look at the lower middle of the cartridge case, it looks like  a bullet impact moving right to left. I know of no other way the case would look that way. An out of battery discharge would not have the intention in that direction and would not have the flap pointing out like that imo.

I need a bigger cell phone!

Now that I have my reading glasses on, I see that that’s exactly what it looks like! 🥸

Here is the head stamp.

Here is the description from the box.

You may be right but this was found on the 25 yard line so not sure how it got shot.

Well that’s a Tula case (not RSA) with an unfired primer, so that couldn’t have been shot out of your gun.

Apparently, somebody shot a live Tula round down range, somehow or other.
