Short Throat barrels
« on: February 08, 2022, 07:34:09 PM »
Like many of us have had issues with CZ barrels not able to utilize load data from standard manuals due to the tight throats, which do not allow use of OALs listed.  Have three such pistols and found a solution using a Manson reamer.  The cost of the reamer was like $40.  Have now modified all 4 of my pistols with no damage to the reamer.  None of the pistols took more than 3 turns to accomplish the task. You do have to heavily oil both the reamer and the barrel during the process.  My results have been excellent, with no loss of accuracy and in one case a significant increase in accuracy.

My purpose in doing this was to ensure safety with my children, who might grab the wrong ammo and create a issue by forcing the slide closed.  Yes, I have one of those children, sadly I used to be one.

Bottom line is it does work, and the barrels were not damaged and unusable.  Think the total time it took for even the first one was less than 15 min.  No pressure was required and very little metal was removed.  I did clean and check with each complete turn.  It would be very easy to take off too much,  so caution must be taken.  I used a dummy cartridge that used a bullet that had caused issues, but was dead on OAL listed (XTP 124 gr). After it would pass the plunk test, I made one more full turn to provide for a margin of safety.

Have put at least 100 rounds through each of the pistols with no issues and all remain 10 ring accurate.  Amazing as the one pistol was not so when I started.  Also have noticed an increase in velocity in two of the pistols and have not tested  the other two.

Hope this helps others who have similar problems.  Best wishes.

I looked into that 3 or 4 years ago and then just sort of let the intention slip away.

So far, the pistols I have that seem to have the short chamber issue are the CZ75/85/Compact models and the Tactical Sport .40.

I really ought to take care of my metal framed 9s.  Between mine and the rest in the family there's a few that probably could benefit from it.

Thanks for "reminding me" OP.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Here is the catalog.  Throat reamer is on page 7.

https://mansonreamers.files.wordpress.com/2022/02/february-2022-catalog-1.pdf

Give them a call the personnel on the phone are quite helpful.  One thing that I did not do that I wish I had was have my throat reamer TICN coated to make it even harder than the P series barrels.  Think it costs like $20 bucks.

Hope this helps.

As long as you’re not reaming a shadow 2 barrel, you’re good to go with that one. The shadow 2 barrel is hardened and requires a carbide reamer or else it’ll test your patience.

Most, if not all people balking at reaming or throating the barrel and saying it degrades its accuracy are the ones that don’t have a personal experience with it.

I have 4 of my czechmate barrel throated so I can load up to 1.175” OAL for my 9 major rounds. I load them at 1.165” and still have room to spare. Accuracy is still the same if not better.

Thanks, I took a lot of grief over this project.  Like you said mostly from people who had never done it or even knew someone who had.  My results have been much better than expected.

I have been doing this for several years to almost all of my 9mm barrels, even the PCC. The Tanfoglio Cone barrels need a far more expensive reamer due to their construction.
