Always disappointing to buy "new" and find things that make you wonder what someone at the factory was doing/thinking when they boxed that thing up to get it ready to ship out.

I've not bought a new S&W revolver since about 1983 or 84.  For those that say "quality has slipped over the years," I will say this:

M586, 6", bought new, would only get a partial box of .357 magnum ammo through it before it would begin to lock up as the trigger was pulled/hammer cocked.  Wipe the crud off the front of the cylinder/barrel throat and it was fine, for about another box.  Found the clearance between the barrel and cylinder was about 0.018".  Way to darn tight.  Being me I took a file to it, carefully, then a little sharpening stone work, carefully and cured it.  Don't remember the final clearance number but it was still tighter than what I saw listed in magazine articles at the time.  It, to this day, is the most accurate center fire magnum revolver I've ever fired.  Awesome shooter.

M29 4", bought new.  Started shooting it Saturday morning, shot is some more Sunday and we got right at 650 rounds through it those two days before the little square headed nut in the frame slot that the rear sight elevation screw threads into stripped out and the rear sight popped up.  Had to replace that little square headed nut and no issues with it at all after that.

Two brand new S&W revolvers, made in the "good old days" and both had issues within a couple days of buying them.

OP, only had to send one S&W back for work.  A new .380 EZ Shield, for that safety issue they had the recall over.  Never even fired it as I only found out about the recall after I'd bought the pistol.  Called, gave them the serial number, they sent me a return authorization number/form and I shipped it back.  Got it back a couple weeks later.  Seemed to be very nice folks on the phone and a decently short turn around time.

Now, of course, hope the first post/report about it when you get it back shows nice groups on the paper.  'Cause that's what a good S&W does.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I got a Performance Center TRR8 a few years ago.  Same deal, the first impression was terrible.  I had grown up shooting a Model 19 when going to the range with my dad, and the TRR8 seemed way worse in comparison.  Mainly it was a very grainy and heavy trigger pull.  Looking online, I had heard a lot of different numbers for the TRR8 DA pull, from 10.5lb, to 14lb.  When I tested mine with a Lyman gauge, it was 14lb.  Seems like a pretty large variance, maybe some QC issues?

I dropped $70 getting some trigger work done (polish + springs), and got the DA down to around 7.5lb.  I also upgraded the grip.  Now I have to say I'm in love with the TRR8.  It's one of my favorite range toys.

I hope S&W resolves the issues for you!

Sorry to hear about your experience, HR.

And I'll preface this by saying that I don't want to turn this into a "trashing S&W revolvers" thread. But I bought a 442 Pro Series a few years ago, and after receiving it, I have no idea what makes it a "Pro Series" level offering. It's a perfectly serviceable J-frame, with a characteristically absurdly heavy DA trigger, but I can't find anything about it that would elevate it above what I would expect from a base level 442. I ended up putting a Wilson Combat spring kit in it, which helped, but I'd say it's still 'just ok.'

Again - there was nothing about it that would cause me to want to send it back, as you have, but it did make me think that the whole "Pro Series" moniker is largely just marketing. The fact that S&W isn't very clear about what exactly is done to their 'Pro Series' models to elevate them above the base models reinforces this for me.

Thanks guys. I'll update this story when the revolver returns to me. Hopefully it will have a happy ending!

Not a great first impression for sure. Hoping S&W makes it right for you. The first new S&W revolver I bought was a Model 69 last year. The grip was completely broken when I went to get it from FFL. I still accepted it and S&W took care of it. S&W seems to have really good customer service, but an almost normal theme I keep seeing is guns need to go back multiple times before the issue is truly corrected. I hope this is not the case with yours.

Shame, I’ve had good luck with S&W. Hopefully this isn’t a snippet of a larger issue.

It's too bad about that particular gun , that's a great model.  I almost got one last year but hesitated and it was gone when I went back.  Got a 2 1/2" GP100 instead, not as trim but a good workhorse .
