Took the son to the range again

No pics this time, but in light of recent events I decided to start him drawing from concealment and engaging the steel at 20 yards. He has always just banged away from the standing position, so sadly his reaction times were VERY slow...and he actually missed once. Freaked me right out. We started from concealment and I started the "time" by yelling "GUN!" loudly. He still doesn't grasp the concept of "moving off the X" and finding cover, (we did discuss the difference between cover and concealment), but since it was his first time, eh, it's a work in progress.
One thing interesting - range was deserted. As in not another person on any of the five firing lines. Could be the ammo shortage, or far more likely, it was late afternoon AND about 100 degrees outside.  ;D All in all, always a good father/son time., and we both got a few things done.

!00 degrees would keep me home too. I'm glad you and your son had a good day at the range.

I'm glad you were able to get out with him.  Always a good time. 

It is warm and very humid here today.  I can still handle 100F when the humidity is low, not so much when it is 90%+!  We are expecting 104F with humidity next week, but that is always subject to revision and will probably be dropped a few degrees by then.

It was well past 110 today, and being the weekend, the fight wasn't worth it. I DID try yesterday, but that was just to chronicle the proof testing of the .54 caliber barrel of a percussion lock rifle I am having rebuilt for my son.

Well, the basics/fundamentals are the right things to teach before moving on to the rest.

You've been doing that for awhile so at some point you do move up the ladder on technique/methods.  You can't expect him to just smoothly transition from one state to the next. 

That's what practice is.  Do it, learn from it, repeat it and improve your abilities.

You're doing it right.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Proper steel targets can safely be shot much closer than 20yds. Maybe they have range rules, etc. to contend with. That's why I asked...

Unmonitored city maintained range, very few rules other than obey cease fire and don't shoot others/yourself.  Why 20? Because normally he starts at 25 yards with his subcompact and hits 99 times out of 100. So 20 is actually,  for him, very close. As for shooting steel, if you shoot close, make very sure it is smooth,  ( dimples can cause uncontrollable bouncback), and angled well down.

I took my son shooting when he was 11 - started with a .22 Buckmark pistol, now he is 18 and has an optics ready 9mm CZ P10f. A day at the range is a great way to bond and share quality time together.
