light strikes with P-10F
« on: July 02, 2022, 09:53:22 AM »
I have been having some light strikes with ammo loaded with primers made by Servicios y Aventuras.  I have two P-10Fs, and it only happens with one of them.  I compared the amount of firing pin protrusion, and there is a visible difference.  I measured it with the depth gauge on my calipers, and I got .038" protrusion one the "good" gun and .030" on the other.  .008" doesn't seem like much, but maybe enough to make a difference.

Both guns are set up identically with Apex trigger/disco kits and CGW 4.4 lb. striker springs.  There could be other variations between them besides the firing pin protrusion, but that seems like the obvious place to start.  I haven't seen any extended firing pins offered for the P-10F, but I know that Stonebridge Gun Works offers a service where they will cut the striker channel deeper.  Does anyone have experience with this?

Yes, I know I should just go back to the stock striker spring.  Still, I'd like to know if others have had the same experience with the amount of protrusion, and what they did about it.

Thanks!

John

Have you tried swapping the strikers between the two guns?
If you go Stonebridge route, I run a P10F in USPSA CO division that Vince at Stonebridge set up with Apex parts, stock striker/stock striker spring.  It has 2+ pound trigger and run with small rifle primers.

Yep, I tried swapping the assemblies but it didn't make any difference in the protrusion.  Good to know that Stonebridge can fix it if necessary!

I ended up going back to the stock striker spring, and I haven't had any light strikes since.  Along the way, I tried the 3.5 lb. spring from HBI, and I didn't have any light strikes with that either.  I ended up using the stock spring since it actually felt a little better to me.

So, oddly enough, the HBI 3.5 lb. spring appears to be stronger than the CGW 4.4 lb. spring.  And according to the little sheet that came with the HBI springs, the stock spring is rated at 4.3 lbs.

In any case, my gun goes bang now and that's good enough for me!
